I have been searching non stop for a donor Tundra or Sequoia, but have difficulty finding one that was reasonably priced or didn’t have 400k miles on it.
An early Tundra is the best choice because there is no “immobilizer” built into the ecu. They are also super close electronically to the Tacoma. Tundra’s get driven to death because they refuse to die. They also hold their value like crazy.
I found this very Rusty 2000 Tundra in Santa Monica for $2k and was sure it was going to sell immediately. Seller told me it was sold and he was holding it for a buyer. I kept shopping and saw another add for it from the same seller. Seller told me his buyer flaked and he needed it gone. Told him I could be there in a few hours, he said come get it.
Drove to Santa Monica from Ventura. It was just as rusty as I expected. Motor and trans operate like they should, albeit loud with the open exhaust. Someone loved this thing at some point. Found tons of service records in the OG owners manual, even with the fancy Toyota stamp.
Plan is to pull the drivetrain and interior bits I need, get whatever money I can from it then scrap the rest. I’ll clean up and maintenance the motor (timing belt, seals, gaskets etc).
Once that is all done, I’ll swap it in and do an engine cage at the same time. Progress will come and go as I get garage time.
I’m sure I will struggle to get it right, but it will be worth it in the end.
