DR winter Barstow meet was a success! My son and I logged 90 dirt miles. I enjoyed meeting everyone—what a great bunch of dudes. UCD Baja & DW Photo served some awesome food!

Friday afternoon: drove from outlet center to Slash X. On the circuitous route to Slash X, Only1Mikey broke his shifter on a hill and stopped, so I went for the pass on the right through the bushes with the sun in my eyes. I promptly kersmacked a large rock outcropping and bent the passenger side tierod ears on the spindle. It bent enough that I had around 1.0” of toe out. Stellar.

Ate dinner at Slash X, then got lost on the way back to camp with the Gorts. Shortly after getting our bearings, I lost the clutch reservoir cap. Started the truck in second gear and cruised 10 miles back to camp. Noooooo big deal.

84Prerunner had a spare cap, so we bled the system, money shot brake fluid all over my trailer, and wrapped baling wire around the clutch master to hold the cap on.
Thanks 84Prerunner!

I adjusted the alignment and we were ready for the Saturday ride.
Drove approximately 25 miles over to old Route 66 to see the eclectic bottle tree place.

Jacob and I had a great time.

Out of order. Sorry. Fuck!

I’m going off five year old build thread posts here. Someone asked about my u-bolt eliminator setup, so here it is:

————————————————

I despise U-bolts, and here are my reasons:

1. Ugly as sin
2. Not as readily available as garden-variety grade 8 bolts. Furthermore, u-bolts are axle tube diameter specific. What a pain in the dick. Bolts work regardless of tube size.
3. U-bolts are made from Unknown/unverifiable materials
4. They always seem to tweak and bend making it damn near impossible to reinstall them into the u-bolt plates
5. The threads get smashed by gravel and rocks and bent making them damn near impossible to remove without a grinder or smoke saw.
6. They are prone to loosening.
7. Once loose, they wear a slot in the top of the axle tube which leads to housing failure at a highly-stressed location.
8. U-bolts require ugly slots in axle trusses, then your truss fills up with water and other detritus.
9. If a u-bolt breaks, you lose half the clamping force holding the leaf springs to the u-bolt plates. If a bolt breaks, only 25% of the clamping force is lost.
10. U-bolts can reduce ground clearance if not trimmed properly.

Let’s move on to the negatives of u-bolt elimination:
1. More fabrication in required to weld sleeves perpendicular to the axle tube axis. (Or to make plates that are parallel to the ground that the bolts drop through)
2. Gussets from vertical tube to axle tube must be fabricated
3. Wrench and impact/ratchet is required for bolts, whereas u-bolts only require 1 nut-twisting device.

I used ruffstuff spring plates:

I cut them down from 8” long to around 4.5” long.

For the sleeves that run perpendicular to the axle tube: I used 7/8x0.120” 4130 tube. 5/8” bolts fit nicely in the 0.635” ID

(I filled the gap in the truss at the inboard aft bolt location shortly after these pics were taken)

No only did I later refer to u-bolts as “botched abortion attempts”, I also likened u-bolts to syphilitic chancers.

Black mountain wilderness offers fun terrain and beautiful views are plentiful. The entire area is rich with ancient American Indian history. Supposedly, a massive battle between native tribes was waged in black mountain wilderness 7000 years ago.

There were a few sections that were challenging for 2WD trucks—FatBrent had to get the Mobza towed up one of the hills, but the Mobza is severely underpowered, undergeared(3.73’s) and doesn’t have a locker. The majority was washes and fast, fun twisty trails. A few rocky sections and hill climbs. Lots of cool stuff to see and check out.6D6BC0FA-5374-43BD-BB0B-1640F4D555A3.jpeg

never been out to this area. need to explore out there.
It’s a pretty cool area for sure.

For a day trip we could park trailers at Mobza Brent’s house in Phelan, parallel the 395 on dirt up to the 58, hit the F22 crash site south of Cuddeback, then Husky Monument, then East into Black mountain wilderness, south to the Desert Lighthouse, and then back to Phelan via dirt.
