Local Legend Project G4 AKA Quasi-Ghetto

OK, Here is .028.

PS:
Motive tech guy told me he starts with .030 on these gears...and goes from there. go figure.
That's an odd thig for him to say considering it varies greatly between case/pinion support combos. Unless he was familiar with your exact set up I suppose. The pattern looks good but a few coast teeth look a tad deep in the .028 pics, happen to have a shot of the "ghost"/transfer pattern? sometimes it tells a better story. I can see the drive ghost and it looks good.

Yea i think he said it was just his starting point for a new setup with motive gears in a higher ratio like mine.. (when discussing the number srcribed on the pinion head.. def not needing .07" of shim).

when you say ghost/transfer. Are you tallking about when it carries the yellow marking compound over from the painted section to the bare teeth?
I liked looking at that during this process.. seemed easier to read the actual pattern that way

I will get some more pics later. And when you say the coast looks deep... that again would mean to keep pulling the pinion out with additional shim, right?

Yes and yeas. Looks really close though.

OK... here is some more of .028. I wiped a bunch of this marking shit off... I look like I have jaundice now. haha.

It looks pretty dang good to me, but what do I know. LOL. What i noticed is the drive pattern ends right before the middle of tooth radius, where it kind of drops off. It's hard to explain. BUT>>> still seems like it could go out more?

I have a feeling @Raceranger97 is gonna tell me to try a .030 and I dont wanna! So tired of taking this thing in and out now. haha

Okkkkkk. Here is .030. Is it any better @Raceranger97 ? I had to move the carrier spanners this time. Backlash got tighter this time.... Like .004

The backlash options were either .006.. or like .008-.009. So not really in the middle like it was before. Pattern is run here on .008-009

Hmmm. Weird the coast isn’t getting better. For what it’s worth, I built another one just now for a desert customer. Here is the result at .044, but in a completely different case/support.

The worst part about setting up ring and pinions is the constant taking it apart and putting it back together. I have set up a few but I am no expert. It’s usually pretty clear if you start too deep or shallow. I force myself to add/subtract until I overshoot it. Then I look at all the photos and decide which one I like the best. It’s usually a compromise somewhere.

It seems that most people who get it “wrong” at home because they get close, say that’s “good enough” because they are fed up with taking it apart/putting it back together and end up running it at a less than optimal depth.

Lots of good knowledge here on what that sweet spot is.

Also 9” stuff is easy! My Toyota 8.4” requires the inner pinion bearing to come out to adjust pinon depth and shims on the carrier bearing to adjust backlash. Clamshell front diffs are a whole different level of frustration!!
