Project G4 AKA Quasi-Ghetto

Well, why not try the 9" rebuild again. Made some redneck tools to get all these giant races out.

welded on a bolt and wacked it out.

press in new one with old one

This one I had to grind down so it would fit inside the deep bore for installing new bearing
k1Ff1dSN_o.jpg

This time I assembled it using the correct pinion spacer inside. Turns out that the original spacer from the 4.56 gear was real close to the perfect length for this new pinion gear. I was going to have my friend use a surface grinder at his work... but based on the math/preload... I only needed to remove like .001 to .002. So, instead I just sanded it down by hand on the bench.
New pinion bearings spinning right about 20in/lb
Backlash seems to vary a bit more on this set up than I remember last. from .007 to .011. I checked runout on the back of ring gear... it was only around .002.
Carrier bearing preload...I couldnt find a spec. Since they are new tapered bearings, I set to 20-22 in/lb there.

This pinion was 1.032 scribed on it. Last one was 1.034. So I ran two different shim stacks to see. Same stack as last time as a test .037 which can be seen here

And then I did one .002 shorter at .035 to move the pinion .002 closer. Here is the pattern from the pinion being closer. I think I am going to run with this unless anyone objects.

Oh, and is this lack of clearance an issue too or what? The last ring gear self clearanced a tiny bit off the aluminum case. These 5.43 pinions are way tiny compared to the 4.56 I pulled out, and seem to have the ring gear too close to that pinion support area of case. I wonder if these Ultra Case's aren't really designed for off road and gearing? orrrr, I have something drastically wrong. LOL

@Raceranger97 am I fucking up here? LOL

Pretty common to need to clearance there.

G4 put in some work at Terra Crew. The trans temp issue "came back"... but I was being real hard on her and it took a bit to get it that hot. (I would stop/slow for a bit when it hit 250.) It still does some weird shit with the lurching everytime you start it. I will probably try to add two more expensive ass linear temp sensors and configure them to my Holley so I can know more about pre cooler and post cooler temps.

Also had a stange moment in second session where somehow the engine fans got turned off. I saw engine temps were over 250! Oopsie. Pulled off track and took a moment to figure it out. Numbers climbed as high as 270 when it was sitting there off... and puked out some coolant. Turned fans back on cruised for a second... whala.. back to 205. I must have hit the switch somehow?? I think I will change my oil now. LOL.

Oh and the Restomod Controls apparently arent rated for such shenanigans. Two knobs left the chat. The first, I dont know when... and I found it in the cab... the second happened in the big rollers, so I pulled over and handed it to my co driver, "here hold this for a while". haha

did you install a full restomod air system in this? I am about to pull the trigger on their system for my 56... any feed back you have would be great... did you get the bluetooth unit?

Yes.
Yes, it has bluetooth. So technically I could use my iPad as the controls... but, I wanted hand controls by me as driver. I think those plug in though.

The A/C doesnt work very well yet. I have a long list of reasons. First and foremost, I think I need to figure a way to get my condenser in front. It seemed to work OK the first time I charged it. But then I think it leaked. I tried charging again... didnt seem to take much refrigerant. It's on the backburner until I get the main things worked out. Like bigger brakes and stronger brake caliper mounts on the front.

PS. the knobs are high quality... it just looks like the set screws weren't either tight enough... or they dont bite in enough. I have some ideas to fix that. I'll fix the knobs before the AC working I am sure. hahah.

oh, and I should add the heater works awesome and so does defroster. The defroster(and wipers) were actually a part of bigger picture for me. On desert nights sometimes you need it.. unless you wanna play scrubb a dubb dubb all up on your windows with a rag. been there done that.

you just reminded me I till need to figure out a way to add window squirters! The list is never ending I tell ya.

I’m planing on using these squirters when i finally refocus back in my turd. I’ve seen a few guys use these ones and they like them a lot.

I need to figure out the pump/reservoir mainly.... I was figuring to just use the factory nozzles (or dorman replacements or whatever)

I'm sure there has to be a 12v universal pump/reservoir...just havent looked yet.

Haha seriously. I will also say that good squirter nozzels is the best upgrade for that system. I did new nozzels on my Matrix car, Sequoia DD, and my F150.
