Project G4 AKA Quasi-Ghetto

i been getting ready to add one. it would be for my van-life travels (most all national parks and forest do not have any signal at all) and so much of the USA does not have signal. plus be able to use it with my baja travels in my truck. makes things safer and more confident of routs/travel's. base camping in cal, nev. meh. not really needed much.
it would be nice to not have to down load maps, pod cast and be able to look up the next day or 2 travel plans and routes, make reservations if need to.

^^yea for actual overlanding a starlink would be awesome.

So, I just finished wiring. What a bitch getting that damn heat shrink on 10ft sections. Hopefully 18ft isn't too long for 14 gauge wire. I heard that these Starlink Mini's want a full 12V.
I read online they claim max draw of 60W, but in reality they take only 40W at startup and 25-30W when operating.

Calcs online make it seem OK? We gonna find out. Damn 2x piece harness cost me like 90 bucks to build.

Gotta love the switch pros too. When I ran my main wiring harness out the cab, I had a connector I ran with 4x power outputs (3x were unused outputs) I will just run the power lead from this harness to one of the unused outputs, and then simply open the app on my phone and confiure the GPS switch on panel to power multiple outputs. So now my GPS switch turns on satellite too.

looking forward for you to post a parts list, prices, do different, performance, time, for the starlink install.

No, didn't use any tefzel wire on the truck. Have a mixure or tinned marine copper wire... and regular copper primary wire.

^^ LOL! overdocument everything. then photobucket goes to shit, then DR goes to shit.... so, I lost sooo much documentation!!!

Shit, and now I couldnt even find my giant folder of PAD notes... and all my suspension valving charts the other day when trying to adjust preload on 2ghetto!! Thanks for reminding me. Way to document all that shit for nothing. LOL

Starlink install went well. Everything is overpriced. Starlink was the best deal probably.
Starlink: $484.86
Starmount. $271.26 for fucking plastic? OOF. Thank god I tricked my mom into buying that for me for Xmas.
DR-25 and SCL for 20ft of wiring: $55.34 Buying from Prowire always seems to hurt.
20ft black and 20ft 14 guage wire. $25.61
Cigarrete charging cable I cut end off: $26.89
Tabs, free from my tab drawer.
Paint, needed to get a canof hammered black. Shit is over $10 bucks/can now. WTF!?
Total: $873.69! Man, always hate when I total up costs. hahah

Oh plus the service. it's $50/month for up to 50GB of roaming.

Speed test: Not bad for no aiming and just sitting in driveway with trees around etc. Over 3x faster than my internet was at home at the same time! derp!

Drove it around town playing Pandora through the iPad. It works good. Next test, can it actually provide internet at 100mph like it says!!

Did you have the orangish truck in oco over the holidays? pretty sure i passed by you on the 78.

Awesome to see this thing come so far. I feel like I have been following the "Ghetto" build series (G1-G4) for over 10 years LOL. I dont know if you qualify for Ghetto Fab anymore Aaron

LOL, thanks Nick> But, it def started that way... and my tools are still SUPER ghetto!!

Since we are reminiscing ... I saw G1 rotting away in a dudes backyard the other day. Poor little fella. Thing was running great when my other buddy had it. It got all torn apart for the "V6 swap and C4"... where they got the motor in, but then gave up apparently. I dont think people realize the amount of work/time/dedication it takes to do this shit.

Seeing Ghetto1 like that makes me not want to ever sell 2Ghetto, and I hope my brother doesnt sell G3 either. I put so much work into those things and it would suck to see them turn to junk too.

Certainly been a fun 10yrs building them though. Learned so much it's crazy. I'm already feeling the need for busy hands again.. especially when i see you guys doing these explorers. Explorers are so hot right now! LOL. The wifey thing wants to do house stuff though. Boorrinnngg.

I just spent the morning reading through my entire build thread and I forgot how much work I've put into the Sonoma! Now that I'm pretty much in the "just drive it" phase, it doesn't feel like it took a whole lot of work to get it where it's at now. It feels like it's always been this way haha.

also went and saw g1, was a lot goin on on one trailer that’s for sure 😂

and yea, that might be the curse once you are just driving them. "Oh, no big deal...build another one." Then you do it, and the reality of the magnitude sets in all over again. hahaha.

Shitty part now is all the mechanic work.

Building and driving is fun, and maintainance sucks. Change my mind. lol

So, took the new bitch out for some more testing. I dunno if I am out of the clear yet... but trans temps seemed to be OK!! I beat on it pretty good too. Saw some new stuff. No idea on total mileage, but it wasn't a ton because gears got noisy after the first long run.

The wine on coast that developed on dyno... is now a scream on coast and drive. LOL. Shit was howling. I feel like something def came loose in there. Wondering if it is ring gear itself getting loose from spool? I do dig the new gearing though. This thing moves along a lot better.

Feel like suspension still needs more pre-load in back... and probably more comp too. It's a little wallowy feeling to me. Turned tubes a tiny bit, but still needs.

sick underglow bro!!

oh yea... Starlink was awesome. Used 3.0GB of data over the weekend. It def makes the GPS app usable... except... the damn ipad screen doesnt seem nearly as bright as it needs to be in the middle of day. Especially for driver because of angle.

Hey, who's that doing like 55mph through the whoops

OOPSIE>>> Guess my gear install was shit. LOL.

Probably pay someone to do it this time because the pinion spacer needs a surface grinder. There doesnt seem to be one available with shims for this case. I have a hunch my attempt at modifying a normal 9" adjustable spacer to fit could have been the issue.

Pinion is all fucked up. LOL
