Project 69

That sounds like a wonderful Saturday night. Feel better
Thanks dude, I know ice cream fucks me up up but I took a gamble on some scetchy looking mint and chip anyways.

That’s how she goes

I went to cal-mesa steel the other day for some tube and just for fun I got a quote for a sheet of 3/16 chromoly…. Granted cal-mesa isn’t the cheapest metal supply. I wanna say that sheet he quoted me for was approaching 600 bucks….. yikes

Dang, that is just ridiculous. I always get it from Patton steel because I get the corporate discount but shit, that's expensive. I should see how much it is at Patton.

Take 2 rear shock mounts took 1500 bends to make but they turned out great. Also rolled a cross bar for the roof. The SWAG tube roller is awesome especially with the DRO (digital read out) on it. You can just set the zero and at the desired end and keep making duplicate tubes. The spring back from different materials will vary, let's say that you roll the sacrificial tube out of mild steel and everything fits great, when you go to make the real tube from 4130 the roll will be off. Just something to look out for

Made the notches for the engine tubes. Now when the rear shocks are in, it's time to make the engine cage.

Oh snap, they finally meet. Those barely tacked on transmission mounts are fighting for their life. As they say everything worth having is worth fighting for. Besides, safety third, it will be fine, if we die we die like men. In Norse mythology, there's only to ways to get to Valhalla, by either dying during battle or sex, well shit this is both sexy and a battle so I'm good. See you soon Odin, keep the beers on ice for me.

While I was scheming about how the rear engine cage will look I moved inside the car to make tubes. I really wanted to roll the tubes for multiple reasons, one being for more headroom inside the cab and it just looks better IMO. More work but worth it to me

Also huge shoutout to Turboyota for letting me work on this in his shop. And generally just being a great friend. It's really nice to have a second opinion on how to make certain stuff and how they should look and most importantly he's really good at getting pissed off and telling me that he hates something after I made it.
Without him this project would have gone into the trash bin when I was moving. So if you like this build, thank him for saving it.

After abandoning the Home Depo painters tape I went back to the phone screen CAD and created this gem. This is why I said temp transmission mounts earlier, the engine is at a stupid angle, once fixed and the exhaust installed it doesn't look bad at all. The cage tube slips inside 18 inches so there plenty of room to set it wherever I want.

Went ape shit and made a metric fuck ton of tubes. Turns out making straight tubes is easier than rolling and adding shit ton of bends. Note to self, don't be stupid. Who am I kidding it's to late for that and I like it better with the rolls and bends.

Time for spare tire mount fab. Made these threaded bungs on the lathe drilled perfectly straight holes and made cross bars that the spare tire will live on.

Mounted the radiator with some angle aluminum that I welded to the radiator and made 2 brackets that will be welded to the frame. Bought these rubber isolators from McMaster Carr. The radiator is 28 x 16 that I bought from a friend for $100 so I used it but I really want the CBR 31 x 16 radiator. If I'll have any issues with cooling the CBR radiator will be a good upgrade with the 14 inch fans.

I needed to finish the rear shock mounts to add some extra strength so I made these fancy straps from some scrap material laying around. And yes I solid welded everything internally before adding the straps.

Today is a good day because today we get to weld the chassis but today is a long day because we needed to remove engine tranny and the body in preparation for the welding.
Turboyota: you need to Tig weld this whole frame so that you can be like me and MCD and be famous on the Grams. Not his exact word but I might have heard what I wanted to hear.
Me: Hell nah, we are going to metal glue this thing with Mig and be done in 3 hours. I mean, I would have to buy the Kama Sutra book and practice all the different positions for like a year before even attempting to Tig weld this thing. I'm too old for this shit.

3 hours later, no not really but it was time to move on. Now when the frame is welded it was time to start on the interior. Made this rear firewall, cut it on the bandsaw and after connecting with my inner artist started drawing lines that followed the tube work. The Eastwood bead roller is a god send here making short work of this panel.

Since I apparently have motivation to do sheet metal work I need to take advantage of the situation. Started making the inner floor, there will be skid plates on the bottom of the frame. I was going to try to use the stock pans but it was going to be too much work and in my opinion these look much better and faster. Faster is important.

Installed the pedals in the correct location this time so that I could place the throttle pedal. Also installed the seats, forgot to take pictures of the tube fab work there but it was just straight tubes and I got the sliders from Kartek. Seats are PRP seats with seat heaters and Ferrari stitching.

Time to move on to the fuel tank. Got this fuel pump setup from Radium. I chose it because it has 2 pumps, one lift pump and the second one for pressure. The lift pump moves fuel into the 2 liter surge tank and keeps it full at all times feeding the pressure pump. This way I don't need to use foam or baffling. You just set the depth of your fuel tank and off to the races you are, I set mine at 14 inches because that how deep my fuel tank will be.
