Whats up guys.

Im sure we have all seen alot of talk recently on pipe stands being used to support our trucks when were working on them.

I know there have been a few fellow fabricators that have unfortunately passed away or been seriously injured by trucks falling and these stands failing.

Wanted to get some input on this topic and see what everyone is using that is SAFE!

I currently use the sumner pipe stands. Rated for 2500 lbs each. However it seems to be the fail point on these is the pin that holds the collapsible arm and cases the stand to fail and collapse on itself.

I feel like this style would be a much better option 10 tons each

Also i have seen guys that fabricate their own stands out of square steel tubing. Sometimes on casters. Many trophy truck teams use this style.

i have the 10tons that you have pictured, feel so much safer under my truck, they're solid.

I had not heard of the sumner failures. I have 6 of them… I might replace the pins or weld them solid so they aren’t collapsible

Those are the ones that failed and killed the JRT Fab guy a few months back. The supports circled in red gave up. Give ‘em a little gusset and they should be fine.

Aside from the support pin going through the frame. The entire telescoping post mechanism seems pretty sketchy. The steel collar just basically holds onto the shaft with friction and the small set screw threads against the post.

I feel like the pin style 10 tons is a much safer option.

The issue is with this sort of stuff, is yes a gusset here or there "should" be fine, however if its not it could easily kill you.

I use the 10 ton and also roller stands that I made like in the pictures on the trucks etc. I use Sumner fixed stands on lighter stuff like holding bumpers, bedsides etc. I drill the column on the pipe stands and use a pin instead of the lock collar device, set my height and fine tune with the screw jack part. I don't use the pipe stands on anything heavy or items Im going to be under, not worth it.

Post some pics of the roller stands!

My grandpa gave me some harbor freight Jack stands couple weeks ago and they were a set of the recalled ones. I exchanged them and got a set of Daytona 3 tons for under the rear axel. Have not died yet. The 6 tons was the plan but in person mfs were huuge and I wanted to be able to use them under my civic lol

I’ve found I can never have too many Jack stands. In addition to the four orange pipe stand so have that posted above, I have six of these

And two of these for holding axles in places

I just talked to the guy at Camarillo HF about my 6 recalled death stands and he said I missed the even swap recall replacement or some shit and now that I may need to cover a few bucks from they return price to new stands… he did say that they would work with me.

Every time I get under it I get nervous!!

They won’t fail at same time right…

I have some of those 10 ton Sunnex in my cart waiting for me to find extra moneies

Do the older HF stands not have the little triangle shaped pin that goes in between the teeth on the ratchety part?

The new ones do.

Maybe the older ones can be retro-modded?

From what I remember it’s the long welded seem that runs top to bottom that blows out. Maybe at welds or plate it 🤷‍♂️

I think that was one of a couple failure modes that led to them making the recall. For the price of new ones I don't think it would be worth the effort and I still use my old ones and some of the new ones without being worried about it. If I ever do get concerned about being in a pinch piont on a project like working on my truck without the coilovers in the front and being under the engine x-members with the frame on jackstands, I'll hook up my cherry picker to the frame and leave it in the 2 Ton setting as a safety measure.
