Toyotally Awesome 1987 4Runner

This is an older thread with some dead links and missing photobucket pics but there is lots of good info in it still. https://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=19275.1380

If you don't need to drop the trans, I wouldn't. Are you making your own engine mounts or buying some?

You going to keep the A/C?
Thanks dude. I'll scope it.

Yea not really sure what my though process was with dropping the cases but I need both drive lines serviced. So driveshafts need to come of any way.

I picked up the Chilkat engine mounts and I'm planning on running the stock motor mounts with a limit strap or chain like @mobil1syn linked earlier in this thread. I have the Bombproof ones in now and I'm pretty over the vibration already.

Planning on keeping A/C

Got timing chain and valve cover gasket in the mail

Had a little window this weekend between kids Hockey and birthday parties to get the Motor sprayed down with degreaser and power washed off. next week when im back from phx I'll be installing the timing chain and getting the 22re the rest of the way out of there.

I’m about to put a 38 lb flywheel in my 1st Gen Tacoma with the 5vz V6 along with an Aisin clutch kit. Here’s a thread with someone putting one on their 2nd Gen Tacoma with a 2.7 2TR (basically a 3rz with some updates and a smidge more power).

https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...gh-torque-35lb-flywheel-2tr-fe-review.641773/

I bought the heavy flywheel 7 years ago and the LC Comp Clutch. Now that it’s getting closer to the truck moving on its own power I went with an Aisin instead of the LC because it might have been more aggressive for my wife when she drives it and I am not building a hardcore off-road / rock crawler.

Yeah get a heavy flywheel and a Luk clutch and run it. Will be way better then the 22re anyday

In my opinion keep the stock weight. You have plenty of low gear with the doubler so the added mass isn’t really needed like it would be with a stock case setup.

So last week got the more stuff ordered up.

Decided on holding off on the timing chain as It is a can of worms with pulling the head off. I feelin like if I'm going that deep I might aswell go through the rest of the motor. So for now just going to get it running

Saturday got some work done on pulling out the 22re... Currently motor is still in but ready to pull. Hope to get it out this week so I can get the engine bay clean up and ready for the install

@the_fablab_ came over and helped me with water pump while I was turning my driveway black.

Why do all water pumps look like a frank and beans.
54648350748_27e2ed5157_b.jpg

torque spec on the Chilton manuel were less than correct. so naturally we followed them and sheared a bolt... luckily pulled the pump and threaded it out by hand... 🤡👌
Toyotally Awesome Ammo can had one of the correct bolts.

Ordered up the dipstick relocation kit for the rear sump should be here by end of the week.
Goal this week
- clean up the wiring that's still all over the damn place.
-Run the Fuse box extension wire.
-hook up fuel line
-power steering line
-Install motor mounts on motor
-Check the bearings on the crank
-Put the motor the rest of the way back together.
-Install Flywheel and Clutch
-New Fuel Filter
-Figure out what battery to run leaning toward sealed costco battery.

Good times 🤡

Feel free to talk shit and tell me I'm doing it wrong cause I probably am 🤡

You're doing it wrong!

Im not going back to look but did you get new oil pump bolts? The factory ones are philips heads and made of cheese and are known to strip and be a pain in the ass to remove in the engine bay. I changed mine on the stand to the allen headed ones.
With that said, I started my 3rz for the first time on the 6th. Still a bit to go but it's getting closer.

Check the bearings?! Don’t ask questions you don’t really want the answers too or let the Japanese magic out!

Solid progress!

What’s the plan for that engine stand? I know a guy who is doing a Tundra swap that could use one 🙋🏼‍♂️

Fack ain't that the truth... I sit on the stool next to the motor each night and sob..... knowing the proper way to do this swap is to tear it al the way down and rebuild it right. buttttt I dont have the funds to make that happen at the moment so it's getting slapped in with minimal fresh parts.and hopefully will last awhile before it grenades...

I'd cough up the stand but the 22re is getting put on it right after the 3rz comes off. For a full tear down and rebuild to go into the Mouse... so no haha I'm sorry still need it!

I love seeing the posts where people say to call an auto parts store and ask for water pump gasket for a 1999 Tacoma 2.7 and have them describe the shape to them, since well it looks like beans and frank
