Toyotally Awesome 1987 4Runner

So it begins...3RZ Swap

Let me start out by saying I have zero experience with anything motor related other than timing chain, valve adjustment on 22re 14ish years ago and replacing alternators, starters, power steering pumps, general maintenance( oil, plugs, wires, belts, hoses, etc) Kind of stoked to learning something new and kind of scared to fuck anything up. My neighbor ( Richard ) across the street is lending his expertise and will be holding my hand a bit especially as we dive into the wiring. I was a low voltage electrical contractor for 40 or so years

This is the motor that came out of @sdecurti https://forum.badlinesgoodtimes.com/threads/the-4-lives-of-a-1997-4runner.3/

So far I have

3rz (guestimate would be 200k on the clock)
a 4x4 M/T ECU
3rz Wiring harness
Chillkat Designs 22re to 3rz motormounts
w59 Bell housing
Header
Rear sump oil pan with pick up
a trail gear Power steering pump (need to get a new pully and a 3rz mount )

Leak down test showed 1 and 4 are in the Good range 2 and 3 are in the moderate range.

Could hear air coming from the exhaust on both 2 and 3. not sure if just a valve adjustment would get things into the green category.

Now a bit of a cross roads:

Do I give it a little tune up and adjust the valves and slap it in... a few IG have mentioned to also do the Balance Shaft Delete while it's out.

or

Do I pull it apart further?

More to come...

Welp, With the growing family a few years back. It became apparent that The Mouse ( https://badlinesgoodtimes.xenforo.cloud/threads/toyotally-awesome-94-pickup.6/) wasn't going to fit the squad. Going over all the options in my head changing my mind 300 times. Talking about building Tacoma, getting a full-size. Doing a solid axle swap on Tacoma.. getting a 1st gen 4runnner... kept popping up...

Sometime last year I was talking with my buddy Sean at Empire Fab about the 4 runner that he's had forever. I told him I was interested. The thing was sweet, super clean body, elockers, HD axles, the only thing it didn't have any drive train or interior. No problem I've got the 3RZ chilling in the garage out of @sdecurti 4runner.Quick motor swap/ score some interior this thing will be on the road in no time.... A few months went by and the reality of I have minimal free time to work on the trucks I already have set in for me. #dadlyfe Bummed I called my buddy back and told him I was scared and just didn't have time to take something like this beauty on.

I needed something that was running/driving. So facebook marketplace I went. After multiple failed attempts to purchase vehicles, finally in beautiful Pamona, CA this bad by popped up. I hit the dude up he responded in a few mins. Loaded the squad in the car and headed down to take a look.

not sure if it was all the stickers that sold me or what but..... Cruised 70 mph all the way back home no issues.

What motor mounts are you planning to run? Ive got the TC solid motor mounts under my 22RE and it SUCKS. I say keep the balance shafts and enjoy the extra 40ish HP and ft lbs of torque. Just my opinion.

The “bombproof” motor mounts? What sucks about them? Just wondering since I’ve not run them.

No not the bombproof mounts. Im talking about the Total Chaos solid motor mounts for the 22re. While theyre awesome at keeping the engine in place, the 22re isnt balanced and at certain RPMs the truck vibrates so bad that the dash tries to eject itself out of the cab. So with that experience, *I* wouldnt want to remove the balance shafts from the 3rz and run solid motor mounts.

Got it. I didn’t realize TC made motor mounts and was thinking the Trail Gear ones were what you were talking about.

Elliot is very fond of the 22RE massage. The mouse is so bad you can barely talk at idle. The polyurethane bushing in the motor mount transfers all that noise, wish somebody made a natural rubber mount that held up as well.

I have Solid Motor Mounts on both The Mouse and this pile. I was thinking about keeping the stock rubber mounts and doing a chain limit strap like @mobil1syn I think linked in this thread for a year or 2 ago a few pages back. The solid mounts have been fine but they are pretty obnoxious in the truck. The mouse is brutal without the head sets on not to mention if you set a beverage on the hood it will vibrate off lol.

I am worried about ripping stockers in half with the dual cases and all this powwwwa from this 3rz...

As for the balance shaft. I am just going to leave it for now as you said just keeping it simple and getting the motor in.

I am going to try to adjust the valves and do some maintenance. I was talking with @sdecurti last night he doesn't think it's had the timing chain done so I was going to do that while the motor is out.

Going to get that order up and get it handled next week after Desert Fest.
