Toyotally Awesome 1987 4Runner

if the vibes are too much, get a stock motor mount and weld some chain to is. the key is to have a small amount of slack in the chain so it less the mount do its thing, but will keep it from getting pull apart under load. i like doing two links, both welded to the mount mount so it was one unit.

Interesting, The vibration doesn't really bother me, maybe I'm just used to it after the mouse having solid mounts for last 10 years or so.

Thanks for sharing that little tip though!

next on the list was the O2 sensor... I kept getting a check engine light while on the road if the truck stays at the same RPM for while. It will come on and then go out? I pulled the code and it indeed was the O2 sensor

is that good?

Same day also tried to chase down a trans leak which appeared to be coming from the top of the trans near the shifter
Pulled the shifter to find.

Topped up tranny was only 2 quarts low on gear oil!

Slapped it all back together and load the truck up for its first shake down run...

Trans and Tcase both were still leaking after my RTV attempt...

So at some point i'll be pulling those out.

The steering box has also now developed a leak... apparently it's not a fan of air down 35s in the rocks... 😁 So at some point I'll be pulling that too.

Oh picked up a race radio for this thing... pulled out the existing CB which was mounted under the radio..... only to find....

going to have to get all this clean up too... Good times! for the time being, reinstalled the radio and just pulled the CB out.

37's are big!

My powersteering steering box/pump like this..... 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

I probably won't throw these on for a while. But like I said the deal was too good to pass up... So they can hang out upstairs in the shop for now.

Rad! We should do a crawler run to Gorman.
Those 37s will be nice for the rocks but hydro-assist will quickly climb the priority list if your going to be crawling more. We still haven't done it but we also don't do gnarly trails yet.

Yea! I want to do a Miller Jeep trail run soon. I've been eyeballing the hydro assist probably what I'll have to do with my wonderful luck with anything steering-related.

The other night after our group ride. We spotted a gentleman in distress Crew cab frontier, dead in the water.. Dude was out solo trying to push it out of the road. We pulled off, luckily Juan had a tow strap. Need to add one into the trusty shit box.

@the_fablab_ and Juan hooked up the strap to the bumper as the guy just kinda watched with big eyes. @the_fablab_ asks him if he's ever been flat towed before and he says no kinda uneasy. So like tells him look if it's cool with you I'll drive your truck and you ride in the 4runner. Dude is like yea, yea that sounds good! So the guy hops in with me and we take off towing him back to his house that was just up the street maybe a 1/2 mile or so. The guy started asking so you guys do this alot? haha I laugh and tell him yea we have done this a time or 2.

we got to his house. Unhooked the strap and helped him and his dad push the truck into their driveway. They were super appreciative they must have thanked us 8 times, we all shook hands, and the Dad gave Mikey a hug.. haha just people helping people...

We loaded up and headed to meet the rest of the boys at Cronies. Just another Thursday.

This past weekend Cruised out to @85Yota house and hung out.

Before I rolled out added a few new Deckels to the truck. Probably should have been spending more time doing a nut and bolt check... 🤡
52076229611_eafe5b1c4e_b.jpg

Trying to pack the truck with all of those subs is pretty brutal haha those and the wakeboard speakers are going to need to get deleted.

Drove the 4runner out. Made it pretty uneventfully, when I hit Bear Valley Rd I notice I had developed a belt squeal at higher RPM? Trail fix... turned up the music it went away... #science Also discovered a loose Steering Knuckle on the passenger side. Like finger tight. 🤡🤡🤡 that's good right? haha

Figured we'd sort it in the am. Stayed up way too late... In the am was planning on heading over to Cougar Buttes to mess around on the rocks...

Pulled the truck into Tommy's shop

We jacked up the truck and realized that not only was the knuckle loose. One of the 4 studs was sheared off...
Sooo that kinda put a damper on our wheeling for the day. Decided to play it safe instead of chancing it.

It's supposed to look like this...
52078522863_1c6abbe0d1_b.jpg

instead...

52078522883_701b0381fa_b.jpg

Tightened up the 3 bolts and then started to take a look at the belts. The alternator belt was super loose... upon inspection Scott notice the bottom bolt pivot had left the chat and was not there haha....Prepping properly...

We found a bolt that would do the trick, installed that and the 22re was back to her fire-breathing self.....

Hit the Trail home...

She drove home without any issues. I stopped a few times to check the steering arm never moved.

So now I'm looking at the trail gear 6 shooter knuckles or possibly just upgrading the studs for now and down the road do. https://www.marlincrawler.com/steering/high-steer/25mm-steering-upgrade-kit-w-arms

Either way, I've gotta pull the front axle apart to get the broken stud out of the Knuckle...

the shifter gasket is supposed to have some AL spacers allowing you crank down on the bolts, yet still get an even seal.

ARP knuckle studs are a requirement, ARPs from Front Range Offroad are the way to go.

you the man! Going to order up both of these. Thanks for chiming in... Little posts like this is exactly why we wanted to get this forum going.

a few more things ive noticed/worth mentioning
- the brake likes with the mini hardline that is unsupported will eventually break, obviously when it is not convenient
- if you ever plan on sleeping in this thing, add a switch to the rear for the window. super annoying when i had my bronco to be climbing over seats to roll the window up and do at night or in the am.
- gusset the backside of the front spring hanger, they are known for cracking and taking the frame out
- since you like going fast, get a gusset kit for the knuckle balls
- look into the tacoma brake upgrade for the front when it comes time for new brakes. you get a slip on rotor, bigger caliper and did i mention a slip on rotor?

4runners been hard parked pretty much since the TT motorsports open house.

But these followed me home

These will be for the front at some point.

buddy is selling his 4wheelunderground link brackets. he decided to build a bomber chassis instead of a truck

So after @85Yota 's open house. Truck sat for a few months in the driveway. I picked up everything I needed for the front axle rebuild. Including studs for steering. Finally @Motiracer38 lit a fire with a family trip out to Oceno dunes.

First thing was to get the truck in the garage. Cleaned things up a bit. Hopped in the truck battery was dead. Tried to jump it... Nada.. My neighbor (who is a Harley gearhead) cruised over to see what I was up to. He helped me diagnose it down to the starter..I was all geared up to cruise down to the auto part store. He was like no no pull it and we could bench test it's more than likely just the contacts. Pulled the starter.

This was too good to not stop and take a photo
