Local Legend Project G4 AKA Quasi-Ghetto

An AJ told me when I sent him link to pro gear 250 if thats the stuff snd he said yes. Regardless I'm running it and have had 0 problems with my 9in and its silent still, granted stock 5.8 and 35s non caged truck.

@Raceranger97

So this is the first pattern. with backlash about .008.

I feel like the drive side is maybe a little too deep and close to toe???

Here is coast.

I am going to try it .002 or so deeper and see what it looks like

Well, shit.... guess I am going the wrong way.

Wouldnt that move the drive even closer to the toe!??

Above is .018 of shims. I just finished changing it to .016, I will run that pattern first here in a second...

Then I will re-do it one more time and put .021 and run that pattern too

Built one the other day using that exact gear set, different case and opinion support. But also using Strange components. IMG_8490.jpeg

OK... man, this certainly doesnt seem to match the "math" based on pinion face numbers...but I can see the pattern seems to be looking more centered.

@Raceranger97 Here is .024. Should I keep going? I totally owe you a beer too! hahha

OK.. @Raceranger97 here is the .026. Have to admit.. I cant see a ton of difference between last and this one. *note too. Last two changes haven't required me to move the carrier for backlash. Others did. Current backlash is like .008

When I was setting up my last 3rd I noticed I had a couple diff pinion shims that visually didn't change the pattern on the gears. I also ran slightly tighter Backlash at .007. Been driving the truck now and it's silent, BUT i've only put like 300 miles on the rearend now

^^ yea, I wonder if that means you are in the proper range... I read some like tighter backlash for offroad.. but I also read it can cause more noise too? I would think tight is better because of constant loading and unloading gears see in our application

@Raceranger97 What did you think of the .026 pattern vs the .024?

So, looking at the motive gear paperwork.. they show the drive side to be closer to toe side. and the coast is centered. I feel like my pattern looks pretty close to their paperwork..

The one @Raceranger97 did seems more centered than mine for sure on the drive side. I got the housing cleaned up last night. Contemplating taking it apart one more time to stick a .028 or .030 in there just to see it... but other side of me just wants to "get on with it" (In a British accent.. which you should never trust. lol).

The best part of the 9in is being able to make changes like that and it only takes like 30 minutes to swap and set backlash and go.

I tested probably 10 diff pinion shims thickness before I settled on the right one. A few seemed good but I kept trying, since spending another hour now is way less time and money than having it not as good as the gears would get now.

looks pretty good at .026 but I would keep going out to see if it continues to get better.

OK, Here is .028.

PS:
Motive tech guy told me he starts with .030 on these gears...and goes from there. go figure.
