Local Legend Project G4 AKA Quasi-Ghetto

Yea... I heard the Yukons suck from local shop too. Everyone says use motive. I will try and destroy these and then build it with motives. Or maybe I will just buy the motives now and swap it out before things get really bad.

I was just running cheapo STP 85-140 this time. The first set was expensive 250W. I've never had a problem running el-cheapo oil in the gears @Raceranger97 set up for me!! LOL

I tried to break these in with a ton of short heat cycles. They have always been semi quiet up to like 50, even under load... but if you stayed on it up to high speed they always made a kind of higher pitched whine on high load high speed.... and always loud as fuck on coast over 50mph.

It all just seems louder now after Terra Crew?? I dunno. Maybe I just forgot. Either way, I know it isnt good like all the other trucks... and I want to fix it at some point.

Yup ditch Yukon, go motive and go. I ran cheaper 85-140 for the first few weeks. then I drained it and filled with maxxima, and put the cheapo in my front diff since I don't use 4x4 much so it'll be fine for that.

If you switch to Motive now you can maybe sell the Yukon for dirt cheap saying they made a little noise because the setup wasn't right and some sucked might not know anything and would buy them or trade you for your favorite wobble pops for them.

Ya you shouldn't be getting any noise out of a good gear set. If I recall the pattern looked good, I'd blame it on a cheapo gear and/or gear oil.

i couldnt live with selling these to someone. I just noticed there seems to be a crack on one toof as well. You can see it here below. Now I am really questioning running it any longer.

F890-XXX is the prefix you want for Motive Gear. They have a street "series" and a "Performance" series. That first link is just the street oem style replacements. I can drop ship you a set of F890543 for $299 + Tax/shipping if your interested.

^^Shit, I woulda done that if I didn't buy some earlier from QuickPerformance (on ebay)

Not sure if I trust QP. lol. They were cheapest I could find at $245.

couldnt find my thread... thanks to this local legend achievement. I think "local retard" might be more fitting, given the 10 minutes it took me to find my thread.. but whateva, I'll take it. LOL

Speaking of retards... who the fuck thought this was acceptable handwriting? Fucking might as well be hieroglyphics

I assembled it with shim stack based on old stacks math vs new pinion markings of what I assumed is 1.016 ... and that means .018 of shims. (If i went with 1.076, I would have had to use multiple shim stack sets, so that didnt seem right. I called Motive and the tech guy said it's 1.016 too, without even wanting to look at the picture)

I forgot the damn magnetic base at Justin's so I am dead in the water until I can set backlash and then run pattern.

Here is side by side. The motive has a considerably larger pinion head/gear at the large section. About 3.25" vs 3". Also some significant machining differences.

Oh, also... finally found a Vevor puller that works on the giant pinon bearing in the Ultra case. Pretty expensive just to get this one part... but the reason it is worth it is because I had a hunch this would allow me to re-use that same pinion bearing.. and not have to deal with re-shimming the damn pinion gear! Time IS money folks. And dealing with that solid pinion spacer in the Ultra case is a nightmare. Thankfully, my hunch was correct and when I assembled the pinion/pinion support, the bearing preload was great.

The gears with the larger pinion bearing are usually a PRO gear. I have a set here I got but I couldn't use it in my standard Daytona support so I got new motive gears and went.

"Pro" gears, typically made from 9310 steel, are intended for high-horsepower drag racing and can handle the extreme stress of launches and high torque. "Street" gears, often made from A620 steel, are better suited for daily driving and frequent use, but may not withstand the same level of abuse as "Pro" gears.

For what it's worth AJ from Evan weller said he would never run pro gears on anything that's street driven, they won't last. He also said We only use Maxima 250 for the oil.

these are not pro gears. They are standard 28 spline gears. F890543 - 8620 Steel

This Ultra case however, uses a bearing from what is likely the larger 35 spline gears. That is why you will notice there is a sleeve/spacer on that old pinion in the pictures above. In fact, I still havent figured out a way to remove those damn things... so I just buy a new one when I get a new pinion nut. I believe it is around 1.75" or so on the OD of sleeve.

I also bought the Maxima 250wt because it's on sale!
And it's "pro gear".... so yea, I definitely got all bases covered now! hahahah

Scoop some up... only $50!

Thanks for the link on the gear oil I scooped up a couple gallons for myself.

I see that it's a sleeve now. You prob gotta grind a small notch in it so a puller will catch and hold that so it'll catch it to press off. Head that sleeve up and it'll come off a lot easier.

For me at least, AJ specifically said do not use the pro gear 250, use the mineral based 250. But I’m sure anything 250 will be perfectly fine
