You were almost onto something with this comment! KOH almost did get CANCELLED! Check out the email below that Dave Cole sent out today. So it’s cancelled?
Welcome to our 18th King of the Hammers, we made it to adulthood!
I never expected, or even imagined, that KOH would grow the way it has. I am proud of what it’s become and immensely thankful for the commitment and loyalty of every attendee who has helped make KOH the amazing experience it is today.
But growth comes at a price. The costs and complexities of putting on KOH have risen sharply over the years. Bureau of Land Management and law enforcement fees alone are tenfold what they were just 5 years ago. Staff, security, power, waste, and related infrastructure costs climb every year. These and other costs are invisible to most, but they’re very real and, frankly, not sustainable.
In all of the years, including Covid, this was the first time we almost had to cancel. It made me appreciate, in an entirely new way, what WE have here. This year when we are doing the things, take a moment to truly appreciate the opportunities we have.
In the meantime, you can all play a big part in helping us manage costs by ensuring that you leave the lakebed in the same pristine shape that you found it, abiding by all public safety rules and regulations, respecting your neighbors and fellow participants, and by going the extra mile to help set the standard when it comes to events of this scale.
Enjoy YOUR KOH, live and breathe every second of it, and don’t take it for granted.
Thank you, and we appreciate you all,
Dave and the Hammerking Team
