Is Alloy Armor same-same as Seymour paint or no?

I genuinely don't understand the fascination with steelit/seymour/alcoholics anonymous... ermm I mean alloy armor. I guess it looks good for rusted out shock bodies, but the cost:value ratio is wayyyyy off.
Just a new fad in offroad. I was talking to Jubera about it this weekend. All offroad is, is a fad... monkey see monkey do. windshield light bars, valances, big shocks, bypasses, raptor glass, whatever is cool everyone wants.

Let's start making small shocks/single coilover on each corner cool again.

I mean you are gunna want to paint your bare metal right? So it doesn't rust? you are going to need some paint.

These companies are marketing and branding the same as YETI coolers vs a shiti vs a Ozark trails or a igloo. Smart Water vs Arrowhead or Liquid Death. People want to align themselves with winners and winning companies. Why? Cause that moves product. People want to cover their trucks in all things that are good.

The weldable aspect is a nice idea for a trail repairs I guess? If you are doing any major fab work in the garage you are likely going to spend 15 seconds to wire wheel off the paint where you are going to weld?

Again, I like to support people I know so that are active within the space. So Alloy Armor gets my vote.

Yes, there are other paint options available. I have personally been impressed with the quality of Behr spray paint.

As for trail repair... you act like I'm not gonna burn right through whatever crap's there if I'm welding to get me back home lol

oh I know I was thinking the same as I typed that.. to some that's a selling point of why to by this over that.

Thats not just offroad thats the world. As with anything there is evolution, people see someone have success with a particular item and that generates enough interest for them to buy it.

On the topic of Sermour vs Alloy Armor, Im not sure. Could be the same product, could be different. But I do know Seymour is not out supporting and promoting in the offroad community, Mike and Nick have done a lot for this industry, and if them making a few bucks on a can of paint offsets the cost of their marketing, time, insurance etc then Im all for it. This is the only hobby people will spend 8K on a shock package and cry about a $20 can of paint. If you dont like the Alloy Armor brand then move on Im sure youll have something else to wine about

Edit: This post was not targeted at you Adam, I only quoted you because I hadnt read anything after that LOL

I mean, a shock package is useful for going fast. The functionality aspect is there, so the cost:value ratio checks out.

Meanwhile I'm over here with 2.5" coilovers on each corner so I can afford to buy my wife a bottle of that wine you're talking about lol

Says the guy with the fake raptor. haha
exactly.

I agree with all you said, especially the shocks and not wanting to spend $20. makes me laugh.

But go with me on this, looking at hot rods you have so many different customizations, lowered, bagged, hydros, stock, lifted, and everyone wants to make their car unique. In offroad though i feel like everyone is trying to mimic a TT, and its all pretty much the same. I am probably wrong, but i feel like if you have seen 1 truck you have seen 100. Now show me some vintage offroad cars where people were inventing stuff... those are rad.

I feel your like me, been in offroad so long nothing looks new to you and nothing is unique, every once in a while someone (RJ Fab) builds something that really stands out. I mean I go to GNRS and see 200+ 1950 Chevys that all look the same with different paint and dont get me started on Goodguys with the same old guys showing their Boyd cars from 2002, same shit we both see in the offroad world. I do agree that so many people want their 06 Silverado to look like a TT with race take off 37s, valance bumper etc haha. In the end the way that the world works the same customer that is buying 4.5" bypasses is also painting his chassis with $20 per can paint, not the 99 cent home depot special. I just used Alloy Armor black for the first time yesterday and Im sold on it!

so what you are saying is we are old. lol

I will say when i used steel it, it covered way better and thicker than normal crap paint from home depot. If alloy armor is the same, i would have no problem using that.

I bought 6 cans of alloy armor at the off-road expo to paint the cage on my can am. Wasn’t a fan, sprays super light, took 6 cans to do two coats. And it still scratches very easy. Compared to steel it price I rather do steel it. But at this point I’ll probably just go back to rust oleum.

1k rattle cans are all the same when compared with a more durable 2k solvent resistant primer and whatever cheap or expensive “new in a can” you want to freshen things up with over the top of it occasionally. I could maybe see steel it or other weld through paints being worth it on a race vehicle but other than that when my heavily discounted stash of SI and Seymour runs out from when I was thinking weld able and steel substrate meant more durable and useful, I’ll be going to something else for top coat.

As far as paint on trail repairs, who wouldn’t have a cordless grinder to prep a fix that has a trail welder anyway? If it is all hard to get to, just scratch it with a rock.
