My kids 5vz is making top end noise and i have been contemplating pulling my 5vz out of my 4runner and throwing it in his. IF i did this I would like to rebuild his engine for my truck.

Was looking at LC engineering master rebuild kits, then thinking about what i would have to do. Is there anyone who is in the off road world that is reputable Toyotas Engine machine shop / rebuilder? or just get a JDM engine and call it a day?

JDM and call it a day.
Depending on where you go you can get a JDM for $1500-$2k (+/-). A rebuild is going to cost that much or more and at the end of the day theyve let out the magic [japanese] "smoke".

Just swapping an engine isnt that bad, you and your boy could easily do it in a weekend in your garage/driveway.

X2 on not going the rebuild route. Find a lower miles engine out of a wrecked and running truck or JDM engine. No one builds them as well as Toyota unless you pay $4-10k. I've gotten two for 1k or less out of a running vehicle.

Where is the sound coming from exactly? I'd pull the valve covers and borescope the spark plug holes - you can get them for really reasonable prices on amazon.

Either repair yourself (depending on what it is) or like others says just swap in another engine. I’ve been beating the shit out of my used 3.4 for 13 or 14 years now without a single issue.

i finally took the time to start prying around and trying to figure out the noise... cylinder one the spark plug was loose, the ignition coil was thrashed and the spark plug was in multiple pieces. Someone before us did a number on this damn engine or something cause we have had cylinder 6 do almost the same thing requiring a heli coil for the plug.

So i planned a tune up - ignition coils, wires and plugs. started with #1 and fucked it up trying to get the plug to start, then went around and did the other plugs, coils and wires. its currently getting a heli coil in cylinder 1. hope it will be fixed by friday.

Also, striking out left and right with rebuilder recommendations. Its looking like JDM swap is the easiest option when its needed, or fork out way to much money for an LCE long block or some place else to do the rebuild.
