things to do with your offspring?!??!

Dang... My daughter (only 3) is all in on horses right now.

I know it's expensive but it looks like it keeps the kiddo's busy in a positive way.
You and me both lol My oldest is 5 and thats all she wants. Even asked if she'd wanna race a little rzr "nope I want a horse" found a local lady that does horse lessons $15 for 45min. We'll see if it stokes the fire or she gets bored haha

Unleash the kid on your junk/scrap drawer with a beat to shit flux-core 110, practice practice practice... and you can work on stuff while they are using their imagination making "art" gluing stuff together....we do this all the time and he loves it, he puts his work all over the property or gives it to people... it's pretty neat and he's proud of his work. Little spark plug guys are his favorite to make.

The boy also wanted a "big red garden" and proved he could take care of it with a smaller garden we built for him a couple years before....so, I told him to bust out his notepad, draw up what he wants, then we'll transfer it into legit plans/measurements and transfer that into getting lumber then build it...of course we had to do it together but it was complete over the course of 2 days and the most expensive thing was the potting soil (like 25 big bags when all said n done) I think all in I spent 500 bucks and it should last a while ....the best thing is that this garden has been up since early last spring and everyday he tends to it and takes care of it....now it's expanding and will be gated in and act as a tortoise pen with a tiny dog house and whatever else he comes up with in there, this is "his area"....for my money and what we spend on these stupid trucks less than 500 bones to give the kid years of entertainment and learning to garden for himself is a win, I am pretty hands off with it at this point, little guy handles everything and we actually do eat out of it.

The kid has proven to be quite a greenthumb, it's relatively cheap, and we find alot of after school projects to get into related to this kinda thing. Here's a few pics of random stuff he has done....maybe give some of the cool dads on here some ideas.

I think the main thing is to just be patient and look at everything as a learning opportunity and include them, this kid gardens, does concrete, rebuilds carbs (take it for what it's worth), welds (kinda), built my shitty shed with me (that I don't have a finished pic of), and does yardwork like a boss, he even ran the excavator with me and was my rock hound when I was grading and redoing the driveway... fatherhood is one of the most amazing things ever, and it doesn't necessarily have to take a lot of money to do diy stuff with the spawn, as long as it's safe, why not include them.

I've accepted the trucks just aren't going to get finished quickly, he doesn't have an interest in it really and my time with him is split 50% so I try to capitalize on the things he is interested in and make the most of every minute, it's exhausting and hard but good golly it's amazing.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoy following along on these projects through your instagram stories. I can't wait for my son to be old enough to start finding his interests and help him along with them.
I really appreciate that man, it's the most amazing compliment you can give a dad...I can proudly say every friend I have made on DR is a stellar dad as well, seems to kinda go with the territory for guys like us....my priorities have kinda changed, seems everything revolves around the boy now.

All that being said, he didn't really remember the bronco, I showed him a bunch of pics of himself in it as a newborn and told him the story of it and he seems to be more interested in it...which is cool, he was out helping me last weekend (until the attention span ran out) and I couldn't of been happier... hopefully he gets into it, right now with it being cold/wet out it seems that the 3d printer is his "thing" and the boy loves chess (which I have no clue how to play but try) so he made a pretty sweet chess board which he is giving away as a present for a friend....which is also why I made a make-shift table in the garage so he can mess around with the flux core.

I think I'll slide into ol' Wally-boys DM's and see if there's any interest reprinting the old DMC logo to "dad miles crew" for some shirts or stickers, I'd buy the fuck out of that

That chess board is cool! Seems like a sweet, good hearted kid.

I think if you're able to incorporate stuff he can design/make for the bronco then it'll engage him more. Maybe he can help make templates and stuff. I know it'll be hard because you're going to want stuff to be nice on the truck haha

It would actually be pretty simple, I got the 3D printer so he could start learning this stuff, I have an extremely nice friend up here who's giving us a copy/tutorial on Solidworks...I am way out of my element on that but have the resources to put that together and as much as I hate it, it gives him screen time but he's learning and unaware it's educational so it's ok...giving him little projects and letting him be part of rebuilding that thing (again, long story) is something I am totally down for.

Theres a whole shitty story with the grey bronco that he doesn't need know about but his mom (that I am divorced from) has a newer one on some methods and he loves that thing...so looking at it from a positive perspective he has a bronco at both houses and it seems to make him smile and helps with the interest level.

The screentime thing is wild. I didn't think I'd be dealing with it yet, but my 3.5 month old son is captivated by the TV. If it's on and I'm walking around trying to put him to sleep he will crane his neck over my shoulder to try and watch whatever is on.

It's a hard thing to navigate, it's important for these kids to know how to use computers/tablets/whatever but it can get out of hand easy....there's really no "right answer" or rulebook for parenting, you do what you think is right and do your best...we kinda operate in our way here at "dads house"...we do alot of weekend camp trips in the cabover camper and the rule used to be that he could be on his Nintendo or tablet while we were driving or before bed, well, that started to bug me because he was missing out on alot of sights and would be a zombie in the backseat you couldn't even talk to him, so I put a stop to it....the last couple trips he leaves him "screens" at home, he can bring dvds to watch on the tiny TV in there before bed or while we are cooking breakfast but that's it, it comes in handy when he's ready for bed but you wanna hangout outside and chill and aren't necessarily ready to call it a night at 9pm on a weekend while camping , throw a SpongeBob DVD on, tuck the little guy in, and he usually lasts about 20 minutes before he's cashed out....for what it's worth at my house while we are home I haven't seen him pickup his tablet or Nintendo switch in months, it's kinda nice but you gotta be prepared to entertain him or keep him busy especially being an only child... it's harder than it sounds that's for sure.
