What do you guys wanna hear about?

Elliott

I went through that other thread real quick and pulled following.

4. I want education from industry professionals.
5. i want more stories that are always told around the campfire
6. did i mention it should be like talking shit around the campfire
7. what was your first vehicle and how bad was it, and how bad did you screw it up.
8. what were some of the worst mods you have done on a vehicle, or upgrades that failed miserably?

@WW_RANGER_X
Some topics...

-The fight for Oceano Dunes
-DMC Grand Canyon run, from logistic planning to the final mile. The pictures are great but hearing someone talk about it may be even more intriguing.
-Trip planning, course plotting
-Trail fixes
-Dezert Meat Club
-Truck spot light
-Shop owner spot light (maybe get Mikey on to talk about the fab lab)
-Desert Racing spectating do's and dont's

KenVP @Endless Trails
Topics:
What do you actually need for a day trip vs weekend trip?
What are the nice to haves but might not be needed?
How to be a good steward.
Just talking to interesting people from all sides of the outdoor scene.

@Turboyota

1. I love the talking shit around the campfire vibe. Perpetuate and fuel that fire.
2. Billy is a fantastic idea.
3. Grassroots build pointers and discussion of how to get started building stuff and the requisite tools. Expected build(and rebuild) costs would be an interesting discussion.

Thanks dudes

Bean counting, general budgeting, how do you decide how much your going to spend on our hobby/addiction, how do you divide what you spend on your whip vs trips, how do you determine the value of what you spend, like buying or not buying something based on performance, return on investment, smiles per mile, safety. this doesn't need to be actual $ on things it can be in %. I am only ever willing to spend 10% of my income on my hobbies unless its tax return season. I don't care about my return on my investment, its all about smiles per mile for me, except when it comes to safety.

Some of this ^. Im curious how much other people/groups spend on their trips. I realize how that can differ based on the trip, but Im just talking on average.

For me, a normal 3-4 day "prelanding" trip is probably somewhere in the $200-$300 range? Usually 2/3 of my budget is gas, and the rest is food. The expensive stuff (truck and truck parts, camping gear, etc) is just paying for itself the more times I use it lol. Hence why I try to use backpacking camping gear - I can use it on motorcycle trips AND truck trips, and after a dozen or more uses, I feel like Ive gotten my money out of it.

i try not to look at the cost of trips. Its more about the memories and time spent then the cost... If i worried about the cost i would never go.

I totally agree. I'm just wondering what the average cost/expense is. Obviously someone that lives far away from the "trailhead" is going to spend more in gas, as well as other variables, but im just curious how much people are dropping on a trip.

I'm in the same boat as you, anticipating $200-300 on a trip, with the bulk being fuel. I notoriously overpack food, but try bringing leftovers from home to save some pennies (makes meals in the dirt easier as well).

From driveway back to driveway my fuel bill is usually in between $350-$400 on the average desert trip with current gas prices. It's a little more if we do a travel trailer camping trip. 36 gallon tank and 10mpg FTW. I'm very minimal on food when we go out on desert trips, especially if it's just Wes and I. Easy/cheap food to cook, cheap beer, drinks for Wes, and snacks is around $40-50 bucks and we usually end up bringing some home. So we'll say $450 on average every time i go to the desert or trailer camp. Man that is depressing lol.

When I was on race gas...fuel for the tow truck is ~$200 and race fuel for the PreRunner is ~$500 (and I typicaly burn 50 gallons in one day/night). Shit ain't cheap!

Ooof. Cost is a big reason I didn't bring my truck to the desert this weekend. I would have spent a few hundred bucks in fuel, not drive a ton due to watching speed metal, and crappy weather to top it all off. I spent $70 on diesel for the Touareg to get me riding up in the Sequoias and back home. 30mpg with that thing is awesome haha

I feel like I have been spending way to much on vehicle upgrades verses vs trips, but I am currently in the middle of a build. I constantly get caught up in wanting to have bigger and better stuff rather just using what I have and enjoying trips. my best ratio for budgeting trips vs upgrades was 2010-2015 I was spending 95% on trips and 5% on upgrades and was quite happy. Unfortunately the last 10 years I have spent 90% on upgrades and 10% on trips, I'm really looking to change that at the conclusion of the build I'm on. I have learned to enjoy the building process a lot more than I used to, but what's the point of having the thing if I don't use it, and what's the point of building it if cant afford to use it. I have never been interested in just having a rig for the sake of having it like a collector.

My biggest expense, even though I live in the desert usually still is gas. My diesel get 10mpg with camper and trailer, my f150 before I regeared to 4.86 got 7 mpg. For food i'm easy, 12 pack of Mtn dew zero, bag of jerkey. Some leftover tamales or bacon/eggs for breakfast. dinner some villarta taco meet, tortillas, salsa and onions/cilantro. Most trips for me being close, like thanksgiving I spent $150 on but I got back with a lot of fuel and filled up before hand even though I didn't need to. Most trips before when I lived in Simi with my tacoma i'd budget $80 a day for fuel/food but usually would be a little less than that since i dgaf and will eat other people's food as much as I can. Lol
