I wanted to start a thread for my 4th gen 4Runner to document some progress and to look back on as I keep building this thing. I got the 4Runner in late 2021 with some bilstien 5100s on it and methods. Loved every second of it but eventually wanted more out of it. It went from bilstiens to icons with some camburg uppers as well, and eventually a custom swingout and front bumper to go along with it.

I started to go to the desert more and wanted to start making the 4Runner more capable for it, so in early 2023 I got the 4Runner some fox 2.5s up front and 2.0s out back. This felt way better then the icon setup from before and I was super happy with it, but definitely had the intentions of going long travel in the future.

In August 2023, I made the long awaited drive down to dirt king to pick up my long travel kit and extended axle shafts, which was super cool to be able to drive down there and purchase my kit in person and take it home the same day. A few days later I found some king 2.5 x 8 coil overs on marketplace and picked them up in Long Beach.

A week later we put the kit on with 500lb springs on the Kings and no glass. It definitely wasn’t dialed but was just happy to finally have it done. The Kings ended up needing longer rod ends to install cv’s, so I just threw the cv inner and outers into the spindle and front diff until later on and ran 2 wheel drive.

Put the 4Runner to use a week later at the bad lines good times cinder hills trip! Had a blast all weekend and was stoked on how it was feeling, but ended up blowing out the stock fenders and headlight mounts after driving all weekend. I’d do it again though…

A couple months went by and the 4Runner got 650lb springs up front, followed by a trip to ocotillo wells where I blew the rear diff and had to get her towed home. While it was down I picked up the mcniel front fenders and got them all mounted up and threw in a new rear diff, just keeping stock gearing for now.

Now to how it currently sits. I finally put 1 inch extended rod ends on the kings and my buddy Mcleod with the sweet silver first gen Tacoma built my front axles with the dirt king shafts out of gx470 cv axles. Stoked to finally have 4x4 again and have already put it to work in the desert since. I’m now planning on putting a shock hoop in the rear to fit some 2.5 x 12 smoothies or bypasses and throwing on some new links. Super happy with now it’s been driving and have just been enjoying every second of it and learning so much along the way.
