It has been a wild ride getting to this point. I sold my Sierra earlier this year and wanted to get into something 4WD. The Sierra was great but when I built it I think I really got ahead of myself building a lot more vehicle than I needed. I had mostly everything I wanted but still needing to do a cage, bigger motor, and a built transmission I was needing to invest another 40-50k to get what I wanted and I was not willing to do that. Luckily I was able to sell it to a guy in Michigan who loves the truck and has a lot of plans for it

Now that the sierra was gone I was on the search for something to build. My wife really loves Broncos so the hunt began. I was able to find an extremely clean 1996 XLT and started gathering parts, I bought everything Cho offered, Mike Cox spec shock package, Dirt King fabricated housing, Wilwood brakes etc. about a week before I was gonna tear into it we did a trip to the snow with the family and getting the kids in and out of a 2 door multiple times absolutely sucked. On the way home I mentioned this to my wife and she agreed and said we should build an explorer.

I was able to sell the bronco and all the parts extremely easy ans began looking for an explorer. Hunting marketplace I found one in Oakland and me and my buddy hopped on a plane and drove it home

I started collecting parts AGAIN, decided on
-King 2.5x12 coilovers with bumps up front
-Solo uniball, C+T beams (plated and trussed myself)
-Solo shock hoop kit
-Cookcraft radius arms and beam pivots
-Deaver G50
-Cookcraft shackles, shock mount kit
-King 3.0x12 3 tube

Also geared and locked it, desolate truss and a few other goodies. My goal was to replace as many parts as I could, powder coat anything that comes off and not reuse 1 piece of OEM hardware that came off. I’m only working on this thing on the weekends so progress is slow but here’s some pics to get up to date. This may not be the fastest thing that I have owned but Im gonna call it now that it will be the funnest, call me old but the appeal of going 70 through whoops has worn off for now and I want to see some shit and have fun with my wife and kids. It may not do anything amazing but it will do everything good enough! Let the fun begin!

Little bit more progress today. I got the spindles, hubs, brakes and axles on the front. I had to pull the axles out multiple times and open up for u joint clearance at full droop so that took much longer than I expected. Also started the brake lines I got a good start on them, just need to finish the line to the rear and braided lone from the radius arm to the caliper.IMG_4432.jpeg

I got the rear frame final stripped and painted and Cookcraft shock mount kit in. Just need to put in the other leaf and start cycling for lower shock mounts. That’s it for this weekend, back on it Wednesday.

I also got a lot of the stuff that takes a lot of time and doesn’t look like you did anything haha. All the front hardware is torqued and paint marked, a lot of the wiring is loomed and fastened up etc

Very little progress over the weekend, had a lot of other commitments that only allowed me about 4-5 combined hours of work to get anything done. But I got the rear suspension cycled and lower shock mounts built, axle stripped and painted, cookcraft coolant overflow installed and fluids in, -6 power steering lines built and installed since I did the solo box and Saginaw pump conversion. I’m getting really close and hopefully I can get it driving and to my work next weekend where i can do the battery mount, intake, and mount all my Baja Designs IMG_4525.jpegIMG_4524.jpegIMG_4523.jpegIMG_4522.jpeg

Hard to tell but is the axle on the bumpstops in those pics? Or will you have to space them down off the frame? And those lower shock mounts aren't the Cookcraft ones, but with his lower mounts and Raptor shocks, would the axle bump to the frame?

The axle is on the bump to the point where it was lifting the frame off the jackstands. I left .75” of shock to compensate for some extra squish. I had to do custom mounts to get around my truss. I’ve never cycled with the mounts that Ryan provides but I don’t see it bumping out any further since it’s designed to limit at the factory bumpstop which is rock hard. I swapped to these foam bumps so it’s not just a harsh hit at bottom out

It’ll still be harsh. They’re leaf springs after all😂
All seriousness you’ll be surprised how fast and how deep those foam bumps squish. When you have the extra load of momentum pressing on them.
How much travel did you get out of that set up??

CONVINCED. Hijacking your thread, Bronco For Sale. Will Trade for tots explorer.

You can get some money for that thing! The 4 doors and narrow track width of the explorer appealed to me. These things are some good cheap fun, for now. I honestly see them becoming like the broncos within the next 1-2 years where they are hard to find and overpriced. Companies like Cookcraft and Solo have come out with a lot of products that makes these extremely easy and cheap to build. I mean for simplicity you can buy a Solo stage 4 kit, tires, and an explorer for under 12k and your having A LOT of fun
