Yo! I wanted to start this to jump in on the community and share all my mistakes and hopefully learn from them lol. My truck is a 1988 short bed p/u, it has been my daily for the last 5 ish years and I’ve always wanted to do something to it and I finally landed on doing a solid axel. My idea is Chevy 63s in the rear with a set of 14” 2.5 shocks and stock rear leaf springs up front with 12” 2.5 shocks I’ve also got red or dead frame plates with the steering box relocation. I’m starting with the axel that I got for a good price on fb and was told that it had a busted hub gear… turns out it was a blown up birf :( but I am cleaning up the housing and giving it a little spray while I’m looking for a new shirt side axel, I’m also debating on waiting to re assemble the axel after I have the frame tubes and front spring hanger mounted so it’s a little lighter not sure yet. This is my first build so this is probably going to be rough for some of yall but I want to make sure I’m doing things right I don’t want a janky truck lol IMG_9828.jpegIMG_3316.jpegIMG_3431.jpegIMG_3432.jpeg

this may be a little over kill but decided to clean the knuckle hardware and realized the dude before used a 10.9 black oxide bolt instead of a knuckle stud :/ not sure if it was a trail fix or the dude was too lazy. But I’m going to get new split cones anyway so I’ll add them to the list.

I also finished cleaning up the diff and giving it a spray. And I realized that I never put the specs on the first post so here

Drivetrain: 22re w/ a w56 and stock case
It’s on 33s with 4.88s and a lunchbox in the rear and and the front once the swap is done.

Some progress before work :) hoping to get the truck in soon and get the bed off.

I also need to install a 220v outlet in the garage I have the proper wires running to a box with out a plug but from what I understand it’s 2 sets of 110 wires running to 2 separate breaker switcher, I think I can combine those to be able to run 220 for my welder but I have no idea how and alot of the stuff I’ve found online is for Tesla chargers and it does not look the same. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Little side project today! I don’t have a large sturdy bench space and I needed a vice for ya know vice stuff for the sas so I found this anvil / stand thing and I figured it would work and I could practice welding before I work on the truck.

I used 3/16 for the mounting plate and some old hardware I had lying around

I also understand a lot of the welds are pretty cold, mainly because I don’t have a 240 v outlet and I didn't pre heat anything. but for just messing with the voltage and wire speed and just getting used to welding again I figured it turned out pretty well IMG_3447.jpegIMG_3445.jpegIMG_3456.jpegIMG_3459.jpegIMG_3460.jpeg

Ok!! The real work has started, finally got the truck in the shop and started taking her apart. Started on the rear end mainly because I’m going to need the rear leafs for the front, nothing to difficult so far but the torsion bar bolts where stuck pretty good but ended up getting them off.

Taking all the old shit off is making me realize that I’m gonna have a lot of cutting and grinding in my future lol. But luckily I made friends w/ Kevin from OCT - offroad on insta and he’s lending me a few extra grinders and a plasma cutter so that’s gonna make it easier

Next thing on the docket is to start taking the front end apart to get the hubs prepped for the ifs hub swap and get the bed off and the tank dropped so I can throughly clean and get goood access for welding the new mounts and shock hoops

Also I had my lspv shit it’s self :( so I was luckily able to snag an old take off from yotamaster 🤘🏼 and got some other parts like a knuckle rebuild kit and leaf spring goodies

I’ve also been practicing some of my MiG welding on some 3/16 all I’ve had access to is 110 but the dude just came and ran the right receptacle for 240 so I’m gonna do some tests with that and see how it goes :)

240 is like playing on easy mode, it'll make everything perfect for you once you get your settings and your technique dialed!

ok, over the last few days I’ve re sealed the oil pan, cleaned all the caked on ATF off the frame, got the shell and bed off and dropped the tank also cleaned some of the undercoating off the rear of the frame and removed the old proportioning valve.

I hit my stopping point tonight because I realized the lines I put on the frame for locating axel centerline seem to be a 1/4 in off off from one another. I know I should have them as parallel as possible so the rear axel doesn’t dog track, that being said idk if I’m tripping or not, I got a buddy coming in a few days to get me a second set of eyes. Hes built a few samurai’s and has a custom tube buggy so I trust his word more than mine lol

Also scored a 8 switch spod system for cheap on fb marketplace but that will be for later.

Super stoked just wish I had more experience so I know what I need to do and not need to do if that makes any sense lol

Also these beds are a lot heavier than I ever thought almost dropped that shit IMG_3572.jpegIMG_3578.jpegIMG_3575.jpegIMG_3566.jpeg

Oh and I rebuilt the stock calipers:)

IMG_3607.jpegIMG_3603.jpegIMG_3604.jpegmore progress!! Nothing crazy but I started on getting the ifs brackets cut out using a plasma torch and I also mounted the front winch plate
Also if anyone knows the size and thread pitch of the bolt holes I circled in the picture let me know they seem to be smaller than the four I already have but if not I’ll dig through the bolt bucket and find something. Super hyped on the progress can’t wait till it’s done!
