The Owens River Valley 400

Gorgeous conclusion to day 3.

Set up camp, refreshments kept flowing as did our blood—I got 60-70 mosquito bites—even on my fucking fingertips.

Many of us went to bed at semi-responsible times. FatJeff and DoDah on the other hand, stayed up until 5am and looked fucking WRECKED in the morning. Hahaha!

Pictures loaded all out of order. Fuckit.

Day 4: successful trip conclusion

Water crossings day 4: 0
Beers consumed: 1 at HD Laser Frisbie’s while filling tire with air
Washouts slammed at speed: 2
Grasshoppers annihilated: 1000’s more
Casualties: none
Tools touched by the group: none

Dirt miles day 4: 76; I took dirt from warm spring into Zurich, then from Johannesburg all the way into the Cajon pass

Grand total dirt miles: 390

We kept pace with the traffic on the 395 on most of the trails on the west side. Lots of honks, devil horns, and fist pumps from motorists. Only one dude took video from the passenger seat. Only close call was an almost-blown corner after cresting a hill. Still stayed mostly on the road.
Caught Do Dah in the dirt avoiding 15fwy traffic in the Cajon pass.
I passed him, then got stared down by all the helmet-less quad and RZR Hermanos between the tracks in the Cajon pass.
Fucking phenomenal trip for the books!!!!

I don’t think that intercooler was doin a god damn thing 🤣
Hahahaha! Intercooler is up at the top of the grille, so it wasn’t quite as saturated with grasshopper entrails. My oil cooler and power steering cooler, on the other hand, weren’t doing much at all. Airflow to those bitches was completely occluded

Ah that’s right, you moved that shit!

The grasshopper death goo coating the entire front of the truck was the worst part. Everything facing forward was coated in guts that turned rancid by the time I got around to washing it off. Degreaser and pressure washer got most of it off but the stench was unreal.

It was a good trip, I'm trying to find time to take the family up to the spring and run through Cactus Flats before it gets too hot.

Totally. The grasshopper mass suicide was a pain in the ass to wash off the front of the truck!

I didn’t notice the smell but I did wash day after the trip to get back to mall crawler status as soon as possible. I don’t want anybody to know I actually off-road sometimes.

Yes, Turbro is an avid map maker, Turbro covets his plottings and most are kept classified, those invited on trips must sign NDAs before files are sent. He used to sell trail maps on Etsy for 10¢ a mile to overlanders though.
What a legend!

Epic write up and great pics! Was the corner you almost blew paralleling the 395, north of the 58? If so, I definitely blew that corner about 2 years ago and it didnt end well lol. I remember it being real close to the (now destroyed) prison. super fast section over a crest then the trail cuts immediately to the right.

Was that when you lost the u joint on the driveshaft?

Good chance it was the same spot! I vaguely remember seeing a picture of your alternate line and the resultant carnage…
