Hi all I searched but could not find any threads on this subject on here. What I'm looking for is storage racks, rear cargo area build outs and ideas for my Bronco I'm wrapping up the cage on. Currently thinking of putting the spare in the back until I build a legit tire carrier that ties into the cage down the road. Above the tire I was going to build a shelf or storage for things like camping gear, cooler and stuff you need access to throughout a trip more frequently. Things like tire, jack and tools below the rack or shelf.

Any pics of set ups on your rigs or rigs you've seen post them up!! Doesn't have to be a bronco any SUV style prerunner.

Pics just cause...

that gray bronco. looks like all the storage is behind the tire? I Kinda like that idea. Maybe the tire swings out to access storage behind it

Heres the rack in the back of my 1st gen 4unner.

I like the bronco posted above with the offset rack, if I had the width I wouldve done that. In my case, Ive experimented with the tire on the bottom and gear boxes and stuff on top, but the boxes on top slide around and are a pain in the ass to keep in one place. As it sits, with the tire shoved over to the side theres enough room to stuff backpacks and/or sleeping bags next to it.

This is in the Walrath built explorer. I’ve wanted to do something similar. I can’t remember if your cage goes all the way back or not.

If it does, you could make the rack pivot off the rear seat tube behind the seats with an air strut and have this lift up to access spare or stuff underneath.

Yes my cage goes all the way back. I haven't thought of the air strut idea but I like that

Steve what size wheel / tire do you run on your 4runner? On my 3rd gen i was hoping to do something like you did keeping the back seat and still slamming a 35 in the trunk area some day. i have a 275 70 17 bfg ko2 AT in there now and seems there is room still for a bit bigger.

Im running a 33x12.50 on factory 15" wheels. Theres definitely enough room to run a 35" tire on the bottom. Probably could fit it on top of the rack/shelf too but it might be tight front-to-back.

I also like Adams idea of doing a shelf on sliders. Would be rad if the tire and other rarely used stuff was on bottom, and frequently accessed stuff was on the sliding shelf.

Im finishing up a wooden drawer box for my kids 4runner this weekend and it will have the tire on top of the box with d rings to ratchet strap it down and two decent sized drawers under it for tools, recovery equipment and other junk. Hopefully it turns out pretty good and stays together decently.

Plan is to water proof stain the entire thing, silicone seal the drawers in case fluids ever leak and then wrap the main box in similar colored indoor / outdoor carpet.

Sounds like a fun project. How thick is the wood/top that youre strapping to? I only ask because I ratchet strapped the hell out of my spare tire because my fear was it coming loose in a crash/roll-over event and getting killed by my own tire. Of course, when I was 20 yrs old I had no fear/brains and I just had it bouncing around loose in the back of my explorer so "meh" - I sound like a grumpy old man now haha.
Hopefully you had the kid out there sweating his balls off doing the hard work while you supervised in the shade with a cold beverage of your choosing.

top is 3/4" ply wood, will through bolt using fender washers on bottom is part of the plan. and HAHAHAHA fuck, he's 19 years old and and can probably barely jack off and enjoy it i bet. He is getting there but he isn't the most handy / mechanical kid that's for sure and i am not sure it is a lack of ability or just laziness.
