That’s a solid thread of ideas — lots of creative takes on storage racks, sliding shelves, and drawer boxes. I like the pivoting rack with an air strut for quick access, and the plywood drawer build sounds like it’ll be super practical if it’s bolted and sealed well. Safety with securing that spare can’t be overstated — nobody wants a 100+ lb tire flying around in a rollover. Seems like you’ve got a good direction whether you go steel rack, wood drawer, or a hybrid.

Well had some time two weeks ago or so and headed to my buddy’s shop in Costa Mesa rosswoodworks.net and was going to make some drawers for the box I made.
Matt didn’t like the box I made so he said leave it all here and pick it up in a week.
This is what we got. Thicker ply wood box 3/4” black melamine laminated ply. In the 4runner with the tire on it is ratchet strapped down to the stock d rings in the 4runner trunk space. Drawers are big enough for all the tools and recovery equipment. Will add some fluid storage containers soon, but it does what I wanted. Added weight to back of rig and tools / gear is not in totes sorta floating around the trunk space.
