Rusty Red

KOH aftermath cleanup started today. Pulled the drivers front side apart to fix the CV boot and give everything a once over. It all looks good, no cracks or worn out pivot parts. Shock probably need to come off this summer for a prep/rebuild. It’s been 5 years.

CV grease and gear oil both stink.

The CV boots installed on both sides. I’m trying a little lower ride height in the front. Let’s see how that does. The V8 swap did not bring the front end down at all.

CV work makes a colossal mess and the grease gets on everything!!

I’ll work on the little things I didn’t get too before KOH and prep it for Mojave Road with the boy in about a month.

Goodbye Toyota LSPV, hello Willwood manual adjustable proportioning valve. The brake line doesn’t rub on the fuel tank now. It will be nice to be able to adjust the brakes now. As it sat before, there was way too much pressure to the rear and they locked pretty easy.

The little black dog was tired I guess. IMG_6387.webpIMG_6389.webpIMG_6388.webp

More updates. The front driveshaft from the rusty donor truck got replaced by a west coast unit with no rust from eBay. I threw in fresh joints for peace of mind.

Finished the exhaust to exit out the bedside. The under cab dump was way loud and irritating. The two 90’s helped the sound a little too.

Also adding AC back. I have never messed with AC stuff before. Let’s see how this goes. The nice part is Toyota stuff from this generation is all very similar. Hopefully the AC rental tool from AutoZone aren’t too hammered.

Also ordered some headsets/intercom. The radio is just too hard to hear over the exhaust, squeaks, rattles , bypass shocks etc.

Hell yeah dude!

Newbury Springs to Laughlin trip was awesome. Got to see epic desert stuff, enjoyed dirt miles, camp fire and drinks/dinner with rad dudes and their kids.

This trip had a few more “challenges” than most, but the overcoming problems and making the trip continue on to the destination makes great memories and stories later.

A short recap:

Thursday… Left Ventura with the boy at around 4 and hit the camp spot in Newbury Springs around 7:30. Met some new people, had some drinks/talked some shit around the campfire and went to bed.

Friday… Woke up around 6, packed up camp, had some breakfast. Packed everything in the truck and turned the key to start it….nothing. No click, no crank, no fuel pump….zero. Heart sank.

Started looking at things..mind goes to worse case scenarios. Remember words from the wise @Turboyota on the mammoth rip..”check the fuses”

The stock Tacoma 80 amp main PDB was popped. I guess the new monster E fan plus the lights pushed that poor fuse over the edge. Weird that it works for 3 days/2 nights at KOH without issue.

Luckily I stripped the donor Tundra I had for the all fuses and relays. I threw the Tundra 120 amp fuse in and she fired right up. Heart was happy again. I only made the group 30 minutes late to the gas station meet.

Headed to the buried dune house. V8 power is much better in the sand. 4wd and V8 power is also useful in the sand. Lots of people got stuck in the sand before we escaped the diner. Some more than once…..

Headed to the Afton crossing, spooky slot canyon, river trestle and continued east. @the bodj called out that he had a clunking noise and a hot motor. We stopped and took a little break. The noise was a wasted hub bearing on his LR wheel.

The team came together, patched him back up the best we could and headed the the closest civilization….wonderful Ludlow CA.

We got there and set up shop in the corner of the Shell/Dairy Queen parking lot and went to work sourcing parts and coming up with a plan. Parts were located in Barstow and we sent a very nice Toyota Sequoia to get them.

We made dinner in that parking lot and got the “not a S10” back in the game. We rallied up and headed to the Kelso Dunes campground. The closet thing east that could accommodate us. We landed there around 8, made camp. Not the way we planned to spend the day, but we fixed it enough to keep it going.

Saturday…..woke up, packed up and headed east. Saw some rad places, smashed some whoops, even caught some air. The newly repaired LR wheel needed a little more fixing and welding. We got it rolling again and headed to Laughlin.

We landed in Laughlin around 3:30, hit the river for a quick dip then some sushi dinner. A few of us had rooms at the Tropicana and a few headed to Telephone Cove for some waterfront camping.

I enjoyed some rooftop parking garage libations with the hotel group and headed to bed at 9:30ish.

Sunday…..woke up, packed up, fueled up and headed west…well south first to the 40 then west. @the bodj and I went together since we were going the same way and I wanted to be there if he needed to use my floor jack and impact again….your welcome 😂.

I made it home around 3. Great trip, V8 power is great, headsets and intercoms are also great…truck needs more muffler. It’s great in the dirt, but way too loud for 5 hours of highway. The 5:29 gears give me a 2800rpm freeway speed of 73ish MPH….its loud.

Fuel economy was 10MPG in the dirt and 14 MPG on the freeway. I’m pumped! It’s basically the same as the V6, even with the high cruising RPM. The 32 gallon tank is great too. Filled up in AZ and made it 330 miles home and still have about a quarter tank.
