High School 04 Ranger build (new update pics)

I understand this is a pre runner and not a race truck but it still seems like a bad idea imo

Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to just find a spot (like filling the rear bumper with/ ) and or just adding some tabs to the rear carrier and welding / securing 1-to a few ammo can boxes and filling them with the lead bead balls used for interior tire balancing… used or for adding weight in specific areas to a vehicle? A 30lb bag is like $100 on amazon.

I always preferred to attach and secure multiple locations using this method that way you can play with the locations while working on shock tuning. The .50cal ammo boxes is what I always used and would just weld them shut. Just big heavy bricks you can adjust as needed. .

Shit even just weighing the two tires before and after filling with tire slime might get you close enough lol… unless the weight plates are just conversation starters.

Dealing with plates on a spare sounds like a nightmare and or an accident waiting to happen, especially for the buddy trailing behind you in dust when next thing you know a 35lb plate comes smashing into your truck lol.

Truck looks rad. Simple yet well thought out
Yeah. Still toying with the idea. I like the weight further out back. But the falling out part is what scares me the most. There was someone that posted this in the spare tire on Facebook. But their tire was laying flat in the bed. So if it came loose. It had no where to go. Might scrap it for safety reasons.
Unfortunately theres no room for any ammo cans in the bed of this truck.

I do have these lead valve covers that are the exact size and replica Chevy valve covers. They weigh 48 lbs a piece. But they are super rare. Speedway motors made them many moons ago for ballast in drag cars or circle track cars. They would work perfect down the frame rails. But way too rare to use them. Still haven’t seen another set come up.

Yea, there are way cheaper options than using those valve covers, which are like fine art!

Figure out the furthest spot to weld in or bolt on some square tubing. Fill it with sand, or lead, or the heaviest material you can.. then cap it shut. Don’t see why you couldn’t do a heavy square cross bar spanning the frame rail just like your dimple died piece. Solves your support and weight issue in one. Lowers your COG weight too which will help. It looks high off the back. Just dropping those spares down into a caged “bucket” would help a lot,

Don’t kill someone with aluminum and a weight plate floating off the rear and coming loose lol.

I think you’re overthinking how much weight you need. Yes, more is better, but load up the bed with camping gear, loaded ice chest, tools… and you’re doing pretty solid to get those springs working well.

That said. I wanted my rear as heavy as I could get it because I thought I was going to mount the shocks off the axle for my links, so I built the back half frame with 0.250” 2x4 rect tube

Yeah. This was mainly for the day trips he does. Something he can slap on with one bolt when there is no camping gear or the coolers are empty. Thought that something back there would help some. Especially since these are new springs still.

But I agree with everyone else. First it seems to dangerous if it were to fall off. If the tire laid flat in the bed. Different story. And second there are better ways to achieve some weight back there when needed.
We can file this one in the trash can.

If it were me, I would get corner weights first. Then move weight from front to rear where needed. Fuel tank/cell behind axle and run one spare.

Rare parts are old parts that are used still it won’t do any good not being used.(Dick way of saying it but I just mean why hold on to something if it is worth money and not use it or sell it I grew up seeing the same thing and never understood it)
