Thinking about swapping 4runner and daily wheels.

1710049039628.png1710049081973.png

Too busy lately to tackle stuff like:

4runner hub swap, more fab on the 7 year cat condo, or water pump replacement for the dd.

@Bosto88 100%. However, the official story is that a bus full of cat-hating nuns tried to kill him when he was crossing the road shortly after I took that picture and he didn’t make it. I don’t believe it though and am pretty sure it was actually those feline-haters that didn’t make it out of the ordeal alive.

In my heart I believe he wanted to come back and live out the the rest of his days as a stray at the truck, but he knew he that would jeopardize his friends at the cat condo by drawing the ire of those feline hating non-fornicators. Hell hath no fury like a bunch of p****y hating nuns scorned. Anyway here’s his babies I found mixed in with a bunch of truck parts five years ago. His baby madre has had 3 litters in and around my truck. (Lately she’s been adopted and fixed).

Part of rehabbing my wife’s rig after her accident (not her fault luckily) involved me expertly busting an AC line. I definitely messed up on that one and so luckily my buddy kindly welded it for a burger and a pink lemonade from InNOut.

On the way home from his place I tried to score some easy husband points by topping off and ran into my truck twin.

No new developments over at the cat condo, but a newbie has been taking over the bed, that is until I go anywhere near it lol. Caught red handed.

What’s one more feline friend spreading cat pee odors all over my rig at this point? Hah.

Unfortunately I've begun to interrupt the peace and tranquility that the catcondo residents have gotten used to.

Sorry bro.

I like this guy (girl?) though, she (?) isn't too scared and likes to chill near me when I'm working on the condo.

1718777199041.png

However leading up to these recent pics, I had focused on finishing my wife's ride from the accident almost a year and a half ago now.

My buddy killed it welding my cobbled together high pressure AC line.

1718777486513.png
1718777544955.png

Then I cut away more to make enough room around the line (2nd time is hopefully the charm on this one).

1718777639322.png

Hooked up new refrigerant and it works again :)

1718777916317.png

Repurposed the skid I had on the condo to complete the 4runner's front end, years ago I had made windows in it for squadrons and put a set of SAE cubes with a nice cutoff that come on with the headlights (if I put them on a switch, my wife will never remember to turn them on and they fill below the high output H4's well.

1718778437634.png
1718778476202.png

And the icing on the cake I made some brackets to put the original lenses in the bumper because the stock housings won't fit with the wings I added behind it.

1718778610663.png

Tada!

1718778689086.png

After that I picked up the last project I had been working on in December when last working on the condo. Made the last touches to my angle iron bedside supports.

1718779011858.png

These bolt to brackets that hold my tail lights.

1718779098548.png

That way I can keep my tail lights without running bedsides and even without the bed if I make a simple mount for the bed stiffeners to bolt down to.

The condo finally has tail lights again.

1718779214967.png

After that I knocked the 6 months of dust off the catcondo and removed the bed.

1718779401882.png

Removed the fuel tank, this is what 7 years of sitting with old fuel looks like

1718779670338.png
1718779715944.png

Ordered another tank on amazon - almost 5 stars and only $200 shipped!

Excited I put a deposit on a new motor I'll go pick up next week or the week after in Fresno

Pretty low mile engine

1718780540678.png

Couple cold starts and a compression check were given to me and I'm absolutely stoked to get an engine for this thing.

Got the day off tomorrow and hopefully I'll get something done other than making the residents angry...

Well it's long overdue, but some updates.

My wife and I headed to Fresno to pick up that engine. 105* in Fresno when we picked it up and drove all the way with AC on the way there and back. (Unusual on my lone trips so I noted it).

Stopped on the way back to get some brunch / lunch. Apple Annie's was a cool pitstop for good food and Americana.

Actually spent time working on the "race truck" with a tool I never knew I needed until I had to modify the lower arm mounts which don't really work well with the XLT lowers. I had figured out that the uppers from Solo on my 4runner weren't made to clear the shock bucket, but I'm not sure whether this was the jig for Solo's lowers or my beat 2nd / 3rd hand rig.

https://www.harborfreight.com/53-am...Yl5r6Jnsibwgp_JxN_5WiRr54LtnxHKwaApiuEALw_wcB
I had made shims with Send Cut Send to make the lower arm inner and outer bushing sleeves fit the mounts. I needed to make them all fit looser on the inside mounting surfaces and tighter on the most fore/aft mount surfaces.

IMG_0581.jpeg
IMG_0923.jpgIMG_0871.jpgIMG_0942.jpg

Got all the mounts done and the cats were left undisturbed for 4-5 months.

In the meantime I had to fix the 4runner. 3 years ago I bought it 2nd hand and while it was uber clean inside and out, with 300k miles it was puking oil out of all the engine seals and an axle boot. This was the intended daily for my wife and I had a perfectly gone through motor in my lawn ornament. In along with the engine went an OEM steering rack, Solo stock size uppers and lowers, and Kangs since we got the 4runner on the cheap.

I give you my heart

1733117920068.png

When I got the uppers from Solo, I couldn't get them to fit without modifying my coil bucket, so I luckily got helped out from my friend who runs a machine shop and shortened the bushings and bushing sleeves. He grew up working in this shop for his dad and is about to retire so he seems to like it when I come by with a new project to keep him from getting bored. He never lets me give him money so I always hook him up with snacks and sodas since he doesn't drink alcohol.

1733118665400.png

However, perhaps due to the uppers not jigged right by Solo, possible expertly bent spindle by yours truly, I could never get the truck aligned without significant positive camber (.6*) from me with an angle finder and by a competent alignment tech at RPM Garage in Monrovia.

Flash forward to today and my wife's tires were too wore down on the outsides and I needed to also address what I thought was a leaky diff seal (expertly installed incorrectly by me and was leaking gear oil all over the wheel well). That "leaky diff seal" led me to get manual hubs for the 4runner and also since I couldn't pinpoint why I couldn't get an alightment, I got spindles from TW where a guy presses new bearings and manual hubs over in Virginia. It was well worth the time and frustration it saved me.

IMG_0963.jpg

The "leaky seal" ended up being a leaky power steering return line I expertly missed and was slinging oil all over that dripped onto the CV below.

Oh well, I got fancy oldschool hubs out of the expert misdiagnosis and rebuilt the steering line.

IMG_0947.jpg

However even after all this I wasn't able to get the truck aligned even with the cams basically maxed out. I can't tell you how many weekends I spent working on adjusting the cams, ride height, etc.

IMG_1056.jpg

I talked to Bobby / Travis over at Solo and telling them that the uppers were the one thing I hadn't messed with, I asked if they wouldn't mind trading a properly made pair if I traded in my uppers.

They gave me a brand new set with all new hardware and uniballs. Those guys always treat me like I'm a big baller. I appreciate them.

Saw a clean clean Ford over there.

IMG_1083.jpg

Got the new uppers on (you can see how worn the outsides of the tires are). I didn't get the alignment numbers I was after, so I lowered the ride height.

IMG_1100.jpg

For some reason I got severely conflicting printouts on two "free alignment checks" from local places. I only changed the toe between the first and second. The toe's off on one side over the other because the rack is off from when I installed it and I'm matching the tie rod threads rather than centering the steering wheel which I'll straighten out later at the rag joint once I get it all dialed in. I also zeroe'd out the toe after the second report by the way.

IMG_5689.jpg
IMG_1339.jpg

I don't know whether these shops don't know how to find preliminary specs, run misleading preliminary specs to get people to get an alignment, or both, but at this point the truck drives straight, doesn't pull and I'll let RPM go at it in the next week or two.

Got like new Hankook Dyna Pro 31's on OfferUp for $400. Swapped my wheels from the Tacoma daily to the 4runner at the same time.

IMG_1188.jpg

With that out of the way, I found the steering rack leaking on the Tacoma daily. Put in an Amazon rebuilt. Got some 2nd hand stock leaves with a 2 leaf add a leaf. Threw them in the night before a 2 day trip to the Providence Mountains with a friend. Installed Baja Sports behind the grill.

1733124698237.png

Left before dawn and got to Cima by 9:30 in the morning. When I had the tires swapped over to put the wheels on my 4runner from the daily, the guy must have given no f***s. 2 of them were filled to 40 psi and 2 were around 30-35. Had to go to 25 to make it up to Morning Star Mine. Then my friend and I went up Teutonia Peak. It was unfortunate to see all the burned Joshua Trees - I hadn't even known that happened except for a video I watched the day before. I had been up here 4 months before the fire the last time I was here and hadn't made it back since.

You can see the narrow patch of Joshua Trees that escaped the fire.

1733122711438.png

Here's a shot of my friend looking towards our intended camping spot for the night.

1733122750978.png

Some cool light on the way over there.

1733122791629.png

We got to the campsite just in time to unpack before it got dark around 4:00.

1733122847884.png

We were up and packed the next morning by 9:30. Headed towards the southern Providence Mountain Peak.

We hiked for around 3 hours through the copious rocks and chollas which seemed to thrown spikey "grenades" on the ground a lot more than the last time I was here hiking on this route. We weren't even near the peak when my friend tapped out an hour and a half before our projected turn around time. I didn't mind, I was gassing way harder than the last time I was here and we watched a hawk hover for half an hour while we rested up for the hike down.

My friend at the hawk's rock (evidenced by a big ol' poop on it)

1733123859409.png

Here's the top (200 mm zoomed all the way in)

1733123602907.png

... and a picture from the top I took 8 years ago (in better shape and in April with 3 hours of daylight more than we would have had even if we could keep going this time around)

1733123500068.png

Kelso dunes beyond the Granite Mountains out on the left.

Got some cool shots on the way down.

1733123919345.png
1733123988394.png

Aired up and got home after a great but short trip.

1733124063119.png

Kicked the cats out once again after 4-5 months of not working on the "race truck"

1733124292680.png

Started cutting apart the core support. Took pics incase I go another 4 months haha.

1733124386478.png

Hopefully bag some more time after next weekend where a good friend is getting married.

Alright cats, keep those mice running scared and pay your rent.
