I also had some strange issues on G1 way back in the day. It had a jazz fuel cell with a rubber hose pickup (that was not rated for fuel, go figure).
I was getting air leaking through pinholes in the pickup hose after it deteriorated.

True Bosch 044's are good pumps. Internal or external?
External. I know it’s better to have it internal or at least have a lift pump
