Local Legend Vital Designs Regular Cab Ranger

^^^^ Mentioned above by cleandez.

I also had some strange issues on G1 way back in the day. It had a jazz fuel cell with a rubber hose pickup (that was not rated for fuel, go figure).

I was getting air leaking through pinholes in the pickup hose after it deteriorated.

Back on this.

Cleaned the IAC valve with no luck. The truck will not run with the IAC plug unplugged so I don’t think it’s that. It runs exactly the same as it does already with the maf sensor plugged or unplugged, there’s no difference. From a cold start, it takes a few minutes for the problem to really show up. Truck will idle then slowly start to drop RPM then die.

Fuel pressure is good at 40psi. Pretty sure it’s a bad maf sensor, It’s the 30 year old OEM one. Gonna try and swap that out, unsure if I want to try and get a OEM used one or try a vatozone special. Checked everything else to no avail, all grounds and power is good etc.

So new maf sensor it is!

make sure you get the same. not just what the part store says. i had to change mine many years ago and it ran way different and check eng light random. got a new tune at power trian dynamics (had a juanco), steve said i had a different maf. but it is the one now listed for the motor. he was able to tune it up and its been fine. this is on my sohc.

Steve also helped me with this big time there are a ton of different mafs for rangers different years and even same years. Basically your maf has to match your computer otherwise it will always be pissed , is your maf mounted in the original plastic housing ? Or is it placed in a custom intake

Well I feel kinda dumb, I’m 98% sure it was the maf sensor.

Stock oem one that’s like 35 years old shit out. After checking pretty much everything, I bought a cheap duralast maf from vatozone just to see if that would do anything. Nothing. Me and my dad started checking for vacuum leaks, shot some brake cleaner around the top of the engine and we’re getting slight RPM drops. Thought maybe vacuum leak. Used some butane shit with a nozzle and tube to really try and pinpoint where, if any, there was a vacuum leak. Couldn’t find shit lol

Went to Christian’s, where his brother also has a 90s ranger with a 4.0. His runs cherry. Said screw it lemme borrow a maf sensor that I know for sure works. It wasn’t OEM, idk what brand even.

Thing runs perfectly fine now with Jake’s maf sensor in lol. So I’m sure it was that. I ordered a Delphi brand maf sensor off rock auto so I’m hoping that will run appropriately. Why do they sell shitty ass maf sensors, I don’t really get the point haha. Like I could drive the truck with it, but it wasn’t very stoked when turning or stopped

Been doing random little things on the ranger. We got the resonators all figured out, just gotta splice those in to hopefully quiet it down in the higher RPMs. Finally put foam behind the panels against the back half, really helped with getting rid of an annoying rattle it had in the cab. Put sound deadening/fat mat stuff on the floor of the cab. Also helped a bunch. Really need to get my bedside supports to linex haha

Said screw it and cruised to 711 up the street for a beer mid wrench

Also been doing fiberglass work, I really want to get it painted. Anyone ever used the bondo short strand fiberglass filler stuff? It’s a trip. Hardens up insanely quick, and heats up to where you like can’t even hold what it’s in. I’ve been putting it on paper plates and it gets insanely hot. But works good!

I’ve wanted an explorer for a while now and have always been looking. More specifically for a paint matched one. But they’re always so beat up. Came across this 91, 80k miles, 1 owner, garage kept. Bag from the dealer and all the og manuals. Pretty clean inside, could use a lil headliner help.

Stoked! Excited for other types of off road adventures. Plans so far is keep it clean, simple and reliable! Could use tires so I plan to get some ko3s. I was set on getting some AR62s to put them on but the stock wheels look kinda tuff imo.
