Hey! for starters, I'm a beginner to the offroad/truck building world but I've got a manual, 4wd, 1994 ranger extended cab. It's got the slowest 3.0 known to man becuase of a misfire that I don't know how to fix. its got minor body damage so its a good platform for a cheap prerunner build. I don't need to race or do anything crazy I just want to be able to hoon around with friends and do desert runs nearby so an overthetop build isn't needed. I would like to know though, what is the bare minimum I need to do to make my truck fun offroad?? I want to be able to take small jumps and basically get the best bang for buck out of it. Any ideas?? thanks in advance:cool:

Just depends on your budget. Could just start with a lift and some 2.0/2.5 shocks along with some longer radius arms, find some cut&turned beams for the front or extended ones used. Then coil overs up front.

Rear is easy, could do the 64” spring swap off of a chevy. You can find a thread on it on therangerstation. Or deavers if your feeling spendy. Bedcage and some good shocks

Thanks so much for responding Noah!! so my budget hasn't completely been decided yet, I'm a broke high school kid but i've got 1500 or so to use rn, and that will get bigger over time but how much would that cover as far as the parts you said go? also, I've heard going up to the ford 9" axle is good because its not cast like mine so easier to fab mounts, do you know anything about that? are the chevy 64" springs softer or firmer? my truck has a big problem with bucking anytime I hit a jump or bump and I honestly don't know what the problem is...

Budget will depend on how you end up with parts. If you can score some used parts you can make your budget go pretty far

The 8.8 out of a explore will be a good upgrade, will most likely be cheaper than a 9”, plenty for 33” tires and can probably find one that already has matching gears for the front.

The 64”s will net you more travel and at a liner rate without the overload. People pull 16” with a bedcage and shock setup. Your bucking most likely because you are slamming bumpstops and thats pushing the rearend up. You need uptravel and shock.

Spending some of your budget on a good welder and fab tools will go farther in the long run. Teach yourself to fab, its not hard just time consuming. Your first projects wont be pretty but you will learn from them. Definitely the way i wish i went when starting my project. You will save tones of money in the long run.

Thanks so much again! And the 8.8 is a great idea! Can it handle up to 35 and 37s ya think? I’ve seen Tensor dsr tires (35x10 r15) for 750 off fb marketplace that fit my wheels and are good for pre runner stuff but they only come in those sizes.

I’ve heard 63, 64, and 65 Chevy springs recommend, what would the difference be between those and is it worth just cutting the bed to fit a small cage for extra travel and going with some taller f250 shock towers in the front?

As far as shocks and front coils go, how do I figure out how long of shocks to get all around and would you get coil overs in the front? I also need to buy new bumpstops….

As for fab expirience, how would you suggest I get started learning? I have a tech college that teaches welding but it’s sooo hard to get in. Is there any other way to learn?

Ya 8.8 should be plenty for 35’s. Truss it for 37s and it should live until you’re under v8 power

I think they are all 64 it just depends on how you measure them. Yes definitely worth going bedcage with some used 14” king or fox shocks

Im not sure on the front with the f250 but yes anything to gain travel and fit a bigger shock will help you

to measure for shocks you will have to pull the spring and cycle the suspension, bump it out all the way and measure the length of shock you can make work

Fab experience, im self taught off youtube, forums and just playing with scrap material. If you have any friends that do metal work see if they will let you shadow or bounce questions off them

Sorry for my lack of fab knowledge but what does truss mean?? Would I need to regear also?

My worry with going to tall is I would need to change the driveshaft length… would the bed cage affect that at all?

I will go with any used premium shocks I can get my hand on haha! Thanks for the advice on measuring too, I’m gonna probably get some new bump stops maybe FOA but we will see.

I will do my best with the fab stuff! I secured access to a welder just barely from a friend leaving for 2 years so that’s gonna be free! Thanks for the help so far!!

Drive shaft lenght shouldn’t change. It will plunge

Re gear would definitely be recommended. It would be rough driving with 35’s let alone 37’s

Truss is just adding stucture to the axle to keep it from beding. Multiple companies make prefabs

Okay, looks/sounds like you're on the right track to wanting to learn and build this stuff!
QUESTIONS QUESTIONS QUESTIONS.

Dgaf if anyone gets pissed, it's the best/easiest way to learn!
you definetly do not need 37s, a 9" axle, or any of the "wazoo" parts like that. you're in the beginning stages of your build. just skim over any of that shit for now.

So, let's start from SQ 1.......
you've got a ranger platform (w/ a dogdoodoo motor, but it'll work!),
4WD (which is going to make it a little bit more "difficult"/just more research/learning for you),
BUT ALL THAT GETS MADE UP FOR WITH IT BEING A MANUAL (I think, at least),
and minor body damage (who fucking cares hah)

#1 - READ THREADS OF OTHER BUILDS ON HERE OR R.D.C. and skim through allllllllllllllllllllll the classifieds of everything to become familiar with prices of shit

you want a decently built truck to go mash and party with on the weekends with your friends.
you have a high school kids budget though.
PERFECT START HOW HONESTLY, A LOT OF US IN THIS "desert/prerunner scene" STARTED. SO DON'T BE DISCOURAGED OR SOME SHIT.

#2 - READ THREADS OF OTHER BUILDS ON HERE OR R.D.C. and skim through allllllllllllllllllllll the classifieds of everything to become familiar with prices of shit

#3 - I'd search the classifieds here, RDC, craigslist, or FB Marketplace (even though i fucking despise that place and think it's for complete morons that don't know shit. which can be good or bad for you) for a decent "lift kit" or........ i forgot what Camburg calls theirs, just a kit with some radius arms, decent aftermarket shocks, an aftermarket taller spring, a drop pitman arm for the steering, and just start with that.
if you still have money burning a hole in your pocket, (you said $1,500..... which might seem like a lot to you depending on your circumstances. but it'll go just in buying a DECENT, REPUTABLE front end/kit that i just spoke of, and tires/wheels if you get a good deal on the tires. more if not)

#4 - READ THREADS OF OTHER BUILDS ON HERE OR R.D.C. and skim through allllllllllllllllllllll the classifieds of everything to become familiar with prices of shit

#5 - (you said you have access to a welder...... i assume that means a 4.5" angle grinder then, as well?) if not use that money to go buy a nice 4.5" angle grinder, a box of cut off wheels and 2 boxes of flapper discs

#6 - READ THREADS OF OTHER BUILDS ON HERE OR R.D.C. and skim through allllllllllllllllllllll the classifieds of everything to become familiar with prices of shit

#7 - use the angle grinder and welder to mess around building scrap shit at home or whatever shop you have to work in. i dont give a shit what it is but just START DOING SOMETHING WITH THE GRINDER & WELDER

#8 - READ THREADS OF OTHER BUILDS ON HERE OR R.D.C. and skim through allllllllllllllllllllll the classifieds of everything to become familiar with prices of shit

#9 - start out by building a bumper first. it's not going to cause you to not be able to drive the truck to work, school, etc. it might look ugly, but it'll be drivable. use the knowledge you've gained from reading (what should be by now) 69k threads on here or R.D.C. combined, hence you should have a basic knowledge of how to/building a bumper. maybe have a buddy or even ask someone on here that's nearby you to bend up the main bumper tube.

#10 - READ THREADS OF OTHER BUILDS ON HERE OR R.D.C. and skim through allllllllllllllllllllll the classifieds of everything to become familiar with prices of shit

#11 - finally, don't pay TOOOOOOOOOO much attention to jackasses comments on the interwebz (usually, their from me. but im trying my best to get better and be of actual help to others, like THIS post exactly ((SEE, SMELLIOTELLIOT AND WALSTERS!))

#12 - PARTY ON and send over your mothers phone number as a thanks. ;););)
🤣🤣🤣

i just had to you guys...................

oh oh oh. and to answqer your question about a "truss", its just basically added reinforcement to your axle to keep it from bending/bowing/warping. kinda like this pic i just googled.

God i wish DR couldve been archived. So much good information and great threads just lost

i wish it was archived somewhere and anytime a newb came into this sport.... they FIRST had to research that website, read a million and 69 pages, then answer a quiz about it in order to be able to get into this sport. ahahha

used parts are going to be the way to go man. Facebook marketplace, offer up, classifieds here, etc.

Keep an eye out for a simple setup for cheap and you can build off that as you go along!

Great thread

As already mention hanging around here and other forums is a great way to learn. Keeping your eyes on the classifieds for deals to save some money.

Really, a good set of tires, a spare, tools, Food, water, some camping gear and maybe a buddy or 2 is all you "need". Keeping it simple and in the dirt is really the best mod.

my bad didn't realize this was engine tech.... i dont know how to delete it though!!

I got you.

holly crap bro you are so helpful luv you!! the simplicity and straight up-ness is perfect! I just today got a stick welder and tons of 6011 and 7018 stick from a bro who just dipped out of country, all there is to do is get an angle grinder and we will be set! just laid some of my first beads ever IMG_4061.JPG
and this is how its looking so far... a little messy I know but I'm working on it haha!

Thanks for everyone's support so far Ill admit i was a little intimidated by how big this project was sounding but this brought everything back to reality! also Im honored that THE badlinesgoodtimes commented lolll!

which might seem like a lot to you depending on your circumstances. but it'll go just in buying a DECENT, REPUTABLE front end/kit that i just spoke of
ok so I'm not quite sure what "reputable" means is the rough country 4wd 4in lift kit alright? it doesn't come with radius arms or drop pitman arm but it has some other things like springs and shocks that are technically "upgrades" just I'm new so I'm not sure what the big names around here are.

I've been trying to find a kit and as far as I can see, Camburg doesn't sell one for this specific truck(1994 4wd ext cab ranger). but...

tuff country makes one with swingarms for $1500 ( https://buytuffcountry.com/tuff-cou...9ShbJ7q3zhsodHJeDELB-UfYSIHromD_YNTLOOc&gQT=2 )

Jack-it makes a premium one with a premium price tag ($2600!!!) ( https://www.jackit.com/fm104pr-b.ht...gmvs8i_RMH4lw1VEO3AcHpAbwtE2czsxoCaM8QAvD_BwE )

These are the main two other than like solo motorsports and Giant who both make egregiously expensive kits. My other option is probably cheaper but consists of cut and turning f-250 ttb beams and finding shocks and springs from various junkyard stuff to frankenstien a cheap version of those lift kits, the TTB beams from the f-250 would be basically free for me so seems like a good deal and beefier but what do yall think is a better deal
