Loosing Momentum

There comes a point in most builds where things stall out or maybe you are just unsure of what to do next. Builds that take years upon years to finish or get to a point where you are happy and then cut it up and start all over again because that’s what we do. I have found myself wanting to give up and start fresh on something else just due to the fact I’ve had it for so long. How are you guys handling this or have you been through this? This isn’t a weird sob story or anything I'm genuinely trying to get motivated here. Starting a fresh build is exciting! Finish the damn truck or move on to something else? Let’s hear it boys.

Honestly keeping momentum has a lot to do with what your goals are. Your Tundra is a very well sorted truck, comfortable, not full kill, and something that can easily be daily driven. Is that what you want? Are you wanting more? Do you want more out of this truck, or do you see yourself in something else? I think answering those questions will help you decided where to put your motivation lol.

I've not done a complete build so take this with a grain of salt. The best advice I heard was do not wait to be motivated. Motivation is based on a feeling, and you're not going to feel like working on a project after a long day at work. Instead, you want discipline. Discipline will make you do the work because you know the outcome is worth it.

Thanks for the reply Kevin. The original plan was it would be a go fast truck but also trying to keep it daily drivable. Having a wife and a 9 year old has taken my foot out of the skinny pedal pending cab cage which is a conversation you and I have had in the past. The direction I NEED to go is a cab cage and I know that. In current times it’s also a very large wallet killer. I don’t want a race truck, just a safe go fast truck that I feel safe putting passengers in and not have to worry so much.

I feel ya. Discipline is a tough one. I work 6-4 every day and come home to my family. Going outside to work a truck is hard. Takes time and money to finish this thing.

I've hit that wall many times, I'm currently feeling it even being 90% done with my current truck. I've found the best way to regain some motivation is to go out to the desert and just have fun with friends. Every time I get back I get alittle more motivation to get back in the garage to get it done.

I 100% struggle with this. Getting a new project can help temporarily restore motivation but for me it's the trips that help the most.
When you have a trip that's looming although I always tend to wait longer than I should to start working on the trucks. I make sure to make it happen and you know what sometimes going out into the garage at night after kids go to bed or early in the AM sucks but you know you wont be sorry you worked on your truck when you are sitting around the campfire with you friends and family.

Another great tool would be your build thread or shit even a note pad.. write down what you need to do to finish before next trip. as you complete tasks you can check then off on thread and post photos, struggles, as questions, fixes, whatever. as a bit of a log.

But at the end of the day just like anything comes down to just hammering down and doing the work. There is no shortcut. Unless you have the pocket books to pay someone else to do it. Sometimes owning these trucks and working on them sucks. The reward is that trip you put on the calendar and achieve.

Keep hammering dude, you got this! Even if it's 20 mins of work a night at the end of the week that's still 2 hrs more than nothing.

This guy. Appreciate the reply dude. I currently have a on going parts list that I need to achieve before I make the next big step. Build thread would be a good move. This will be a long one.

Is the truck useable now? If so, maybe just take it out and enjoy it with your family? spend the time and money on Fuel and food and seeing cool shit. If not, what does it need to get it to the point you can go rip around...

I get it there always the need for more bigger better faster but what's even weirder most of the time you look back and say shit when the truck was less built it was also just as fun.

When I need motivation I go wheeling with what I have and remind myself why I'm even doing it in the first place. I've done Mojave Rd in 3 different DD trucks when the prerunner was down and now I'm punishing myself with an underbuilt Jeep to keep motivation on the family crawler. Steals a bit of time for maintenance but also mixes up the work needed. Lists do help so that you can choose some easier tasks when short on time. Retail therapy always helps hype you back up too.

Yes, truck is 100% usable now and does get used. By no means is it a full blown project truck. What it lacks is safety. By that I mean needs a cab cage and everything that goes with it. I think my biggest problem is when I get out and trucks working well I want to push it. That scares me a bit. So I park it. If I’m with a group that’s doing a slow pace loop or a big group ride, I’m fine. It’s when I get out in the open or in the big stuff where I want to get after it.

I definitely need to get out there. There’s a lot of routes out there I’ve never done that I’ve always had on my “to do list”. Thanks for the reply man

lmao you arent alone. I put my truck on the back burner since like feb. finally got some work done to it, and i am so excited to drive it i cant wait. I was at the point where i started to think about selling it.

Gotcha, I can totally relate to that with my 4 runner right now. Needs a cage ASAP. I've got a motorswap to do and then cage is next on the list then 3 link front then rear suspension then... So I guess for me. I have just prioritized list for myself. That helps me stay on track.

Are you gunna do the cage or are you looking at a prefab cage? TRE?

Sounds like you have lots of work to do too!

Sadly no one makes any type of pre fab cage for my truck. Just like 90% of my truck everything is custom. Just have to talk one of these guys into doing it for me while I wash their dishes and mow their lawn.

got a question that maybe you guys know. I was looking at prefab cages...

TE design like $2,600

Izzy fab $5,250

What the heck, anyone know why?

maybe some one on the forum here can help with that? @85Yota or @the bodj @the_fablab_
Tommy doesn’t have a lawn. From what I can tell anyway. Kevin created his lawn and would probably cut me for mowing it. Mikey might let me wash his cars or something.

Seriously though I just need to do it. Whatever it takes. From what all of you have said in a really nice way, put your purse down and get after it.

or keep your purse. Keep a lid on it even with a cage you probably aren't going to be driving that fast with your family in the car. Go enjoy your truck!
