So I got this in a trade for a jeep Cherokee back in 2012. I’ve always loved 84-95 Toyota’s since I was a kid, so when it was offered in a trade I jumped on it.

Idea was never to make it a fast desert rig, I liked it for cruising off-road and camping with the wife and dog, for going fast I have a dirtbike. I’ve been buddies with @Turboyota for quite a while and pretty much since I got the thing he was telling me to LT it and have more fun. The first thing I did when I got it was add fox 2.0 smoothies to it just to be able to have better handling and be able to go a bit quicker than completely stock. Shortly after that I added fox 2.0x2” bump stops up front.

And that’s how it stayed for a long time. I’d play with shock valving to get it a little better and at that point it was great to drive. I could smash around at a decent pace and it was surprisingly quick for what it was.



So I drove the piss out of ‘er for 6 years till 2018. A lot of dirt miles, camping trips, awesome times were had in the little slowrunner. Turdbloyota finally talked me into finishing the LT kit he had half finished years ago when I stopped by to grab an old tire as a spare. The kit was stock Toyota 4wd arms extended and plated. The upper arms he made were beautifully crafted, tig welded and boxed with 4130. A stark contrast to my lowers which were mig welded and boxed with mild steel. They definitely have gotten the job done so far.

I've had a couple of pictures do the same for me. I've just been taking a screen shot and then copying them to the site because it makes the file size smaller.

It is something we'll be looking into and probably an easy fit but both Elliot and I are new to this... We'll figure it out though.

if you or elliot need help on that, you guys can PM me. i run my own site with xenforo as well. there is ALOT about this that can be hard to grasp, hell im still learning. i googled the shit out of stuff initally till i got the hang of it

there is a dedicated file size limit under "settings" in the upper right corner on the admin site. you can just search maximum attachment if you want as well. i think default is 2 megs, i have my site set to 3 megs just to keep an eye on server space used. overall pixle size is 1600x1600. i have a feeling thats more your issue than the actual file data size.

I had to filter all of my pictures through https://tinyjpg.com/. Break point seemed to be 1MB. Anything over that failed every time.

So like I said beginning of 2018 is when I stopped by @Turboyota ’s to grab a spare tire when his shit talking finally worked, I’m sure he called me something derogatory as per usual, so I grabbed the arms and started working on them. After about a week or two I had the lowers finished up and maybe another week they were on the truck. The whole build process of the kit is documented on dezert rangers under a thread called “budget long travel” with measurements and everything if anyone would ever like to duplicate. I’ll eventually move it over to here when I get the time to compile all the photos and text and format a new thread so stay tuned for that.

Anyway got the kit finished and turbo, white trash Kyle and myself thrashed on the truck all day only taking breaks to smash the quad whoops in turbo’s yard and then go partake some German food and beer.

So I drove it with the tiny foxes up front for a while, valved them with heavy shim stacks to kinda control the front end, and eventually put in 2.5 sway a ways. Definitely helped alot. Rear had the same 2.0 foxes since the beginning up till Christmas time when I sold them to a friend because I had planned on getting some 3.0 SAWs mounted up over the two weeks I had off from work. Well, it rained and snowed the entire time I had off work so I ended up putting some old ranchos in the stock location and it’s stayed that way since. Hopefully soon I’ll get the big shocks out back so it keeps up with the front, problem with 4Runner from 1990 on is they’re 4 link with a panhard bar and leave very little room to add big shocks without going into the cab, this is a cruiser and camper for my wife and I to get out and explore. I don’t want a roof top tent so the bed has to stay comfortable enough to sleep in, don’t want a jungle gym back there. Since the LT we’ve probably put 2000 dirt miles on the 4Runner and it’s been an absolute blast, thanks to turdblo shit talking me into LT. I’ve learned a lot about metal fab, how to set stuff up and definitely how to break stuff. I’m looking forward to seeing everything people post up here and to continue to learn from people with more expertise than myself.

So this weekend I was working on the 4Runner, eyeing how to get some thicc bois under the back without having to completely chop the thing up. Talking to turboyota and a couple other dudes and I got some long lower mounts to be able to push the lowers out away from the housing to be able to clear the track bar at bump. It was a long weekend but somehow I was able to get them in in a pretty short amount of time.

I was just eyeballing stuff when turbo came by and started aggressively removing metal from the underside of the truck. Fucking gorilla with an angle grinder, well the first cut had been made so it was time to dive in

It was tight packaging and some spots needed massaging
Luckily the long rock finder lower mounts were just about perfect

Finished up around dusk last night and took the wife out to see how it did. Baseline valving was great out in the local hills. I know I know the shocks are leaned far back falling rate blah blah blah. Well it’s better than what it had and this is a brophy truck not a trophy truck. I know three trucks that have their shocks like this and they all handle amazing for what they are (See @84projectFORD retard TT) point is shocks are still out of the cab and this will continue to be a comfy cruiser, I’ll just be able to cruise much faster now. At bump they’re just a hair tighter than 45° and at droop they’re a hair tighter than 55°, it cycles great and handles even better than I could have imagined. Now I’m definitely ready for the next meat meet, hopefully my steering box doesn’t bleed to death on the next one.

Okay so after going out to local stuff a few times the rain ruts and washboard was chattering the truck around like crazy, I don’t remember if I’ve ever actually checked the valving up front until today. So here’s valving specs for my shitbox if anyone ever decides to duplicate what I’ve got since it’s easy and pretty effective for what it is.

So I haven’t tried it on any whoops or desert stuff yet, just local spots and played around. some good little washout and g outs and a fun little jump. Chatter is muuuuch better now, can hear it plenty but can’t really feel it with 30psi in the tires. Everything I did today and I didn’t bottom it out once and there was a couple hard hits.

Been real busy the past couple months but squeezed in a tiny bit of truck time where I could. Installed new 4.88 gears front and rear and added an Eaton truetrac out back into a new to me v6 diff from a 97 4Runner. I’ve never done gears before but I’m only a little retarded so I figured I’d give it a shot. My old gears have been whining since the meat meet of 2021 and finally became unbearable around May/June.







When I pulled the old diff my wife was helping me and she said “ooo the oil in the bucket is so sparkly!” Hahahah
The front I did about a month later, this past weekend. Was real quick and easy, luckily the shims that were in it got it right back to the sweet spot of backlash and paint pattern. Just swapped out gears and bearings and slapped it back together. It actually took me longer to get the thing out of the front than it did for me to rebuild it and get it back in there.

Much better. Has pep, to the point where if I take off too quick it’ll actually chirp the tires. Haven’t done anything to test the truetrac much past just spinning tires in the dirt, which it does evenly now. I can climb grades without wringing out 3rd gear on the highway which is awesome, and now it doesn’t ping in the heat while climbing hills too. Triple win!

Ever since I put the shocks in the rear I haven’t been able to keep the spare under there. Having it in the bed sucks cause I have to take it out when we sleep back there and the dog stumbles over it and doesn’t have room to chill if the wife is in the front seat. Started planning out a swing out tire carrier a couple weeks ago and ordered a spindle, mounting plate, and latch from ruffstuff. Upper contact point is a soft urethane isolate plate with a backing plate with more urethane inside to have a little give since one contact point is on the body. Has sleeves in there too so it can be torqued down and still allow the urethane to be soft. I’ve dubbed this the “rem pile swinger” all the tubes and plate were rems I had in my pile in the garage. Let’s just say if sleeving tubes is cool, consider me miles davis.
