What’s the general consensus on drilling out steel wheels for 5/8 studs? If they were aluminum wheels I’d do it in a heartbeat.

I have hubs with 5/8 studs but my current steel wheels stud holes are not big enough to pass the 5/8 stud through them. Would you drill them out and open them up? Or I could possibly even just use a reamer.

Currently holes in wheels are just about .600 need to be about .670 for 5/8 studs.

I have the ability to chamfer the holes and drill them out so tools aren’t the issue.

If you push steel wheels too much you will crack and blow the wheel out over/around the lugs. By push, I mean really push sideways rally style. Seen it and it is not pretty.
These wheels are on a 3rd gen 4runner with no power and to top heavy to be sliding around side loading the wheel and after looking at what I want to do again, I was thinking I needed to drill them out a lot more than i actually do. I was looking at the knurled part diameter. The threaded diameter of a 5/8-18 stud is only like .625 so I only have to drill the .600 hole to .625. I’m doing it and will see where / what happens.

If I really don’t like it we will get different wheels

I hear "drill out to 5/8" then I think you mean business, but sounds like you are just prelanding ;)
Pretty much. I had intentions of building my 3rd gen 4Runner alittle more built and fun but that turns into a vehicle that was going to need to much work I’m not capable of doing my self. I had a pair of spindles with 5/8 studs started.

So now I’m just gonna scrap my project and put all my bolt on parts in my kids 3rd gen 4runner. I don’t wanna give him my $3k beadlock wheels, but I do want to use the fully rebuilt spindles and hubs so I’ll convert his axles to take 5/8 studs and drill out the steel wheels and be overkill but I have the shit so figured I’d do it, if it isn’t to big a pain in the ass or a hazard.

But long travel front with a bolt on 3 link rear. It should be fun for the type of off road stuff we do. Wish putting a v8 in it was easier or the supercharger was more affordable but for now 3.4l of fury it is!
