Long time lurker on the other site and have been scouring archives over the last few days so figured I may as well start a build thread. Truck is an extra cab 4wd 02 ranger with the sohc. When I got it in highschool it was just a lift shackle deal with shocks and 33's aka epic to my pea brain lol. Started stashing cash and saved up for a killer deal for a dixon bros kit plus extra goodies for like 2k which sat in the garage for a couple years since I was planing on caging before putting any of the actual cool stuff on. By the time I was a senior I'd had the engine fail twice due to the damn timing chains but it was running strong and the cage started. Finished the cage after school and on weekends then started college and the truck began its life as a lawn ornament.

Winter break first year I came hope and finally started installing the "bolt on" kit that did not bolt on so well onto this tired salvage title so it sat in a repeating cycle for a few years of me barely working on it due to being 500+ miles away most of the year. At some point during college I drove it with the front kit but without any breaks since I didn't have the extended lines but it worked good enough that I started saving my pennies to redo the donkey ass stock rear suspension.

Flash forward again to march of 2023 I am sadly a real adult now post grad but have real adult money so dropped a chunk of change on deavers, bypasses, f150 8.8, and an unplanned set of new wheels to fit around the bigger rear brakes lol. Drove it around the coachella valley for the week I was at my parents after it was done where it now still sits waiting for some finish work to be done.

So now with the long backstory out of the way, current condition of the truck is: currently passed CA smog and is registered and legal for street driving, working ac and heat even with the dash tube, full interior retained, front is bumped and strapped at 15"-16" of useable 4wd with no binding on the CV's, a poorly mounted set of deavers (I didn't move the hanger back so there a huge amount of leaf seperation currently) with a set of fox 2.5 18" double bypasses, a set of 37's we had laying around that rub like hell. Also just got the axles dropped off from getting geared to 4.88's.

I'm currently buying straps and bumps for the rear as well as a gate shifter for the fiberwerx center console I have on a shelf and a lot of other odds and ends that need finish work. Planning a trip in September for two weeks to go down and thrash on it with some help from a buddy or two in hopes of getting it ready enough for some actual trips to ocotillo wells this season intsead of just dreaming about them all night.

Got a bunch of parts delivered this week from Kartek that I’m hoping to mount over Labor Day weekend, but got the FiberwerX center console mocks up and ready to get marked for the winters shifter and some much needed cup holders

Had some time to work on the truck this weekend to clean up some wiring with a switch pros look alike as well as mounting the winters shifter. Also finally took the rear end apart and broke down the leaf pack to properly mount the leaf hangar where it needed to be and not just the factory locations. Pack cycled about 16” of travel which was less than expected but at is probably due for a rearch at the least but gonna just run it for now cause I’m spendin money faster than I’m making it some weeks lol. Gonna be out of town for work again for a couple weeks but have the bump stops, ECU is out to Juanco for a tune, and need to order limit straps and a couple other odds and ends.

big fan of the cage super simple definitely going to use some inspiration on this for my truck, what hangers and shackles are you running? a buddy of mine is pulling upwards of 18 in the rear with a similar setup.

I’m currently running flipped stock hangars and some shackles that came with the leafs when I bought them. They look similar to blitzkrieg and are 7” of memory serves. Also realized the driveshaft his the crossmember which is what is most likely limiting my droop so I’m gonna rework that in the coming weeks in addition to finishing up other loose ends.

Been working on some of the little stuff the last few weeks and got the bed on and have been driving the truck around town at night when it’s not hot as balls.

Finished mounting the shifter cable to the trans then forgot to block the tires and the truck rolled off the driveway into my dads gladiator so new tranny cooler and fixing the core support just got added to my list after my singular brain cell took the day off.

Got new wheels for the 37’s and noticed that the tires rub the upper control arms now with the offset i got so I’ll be throwing some spacers on for now till I'm cool enough for bead locks.

All the front ball joints are cooked from being in the desert sun so gonna order new ones and replace those as well as the front diff and steering rack while everything’s apart. Also need to mount my spares in the bed to add some weight cause damn is it stiff right now. Hoping to get it ready for the clean desert event in a few weeks but have some stuff keeping me out of town so it’s looking less and less likely but that won’t stop me from thrashing when I’m back next week.

All my photos are failing to upload rn, but I’ll try and downscale them later when I’m at my computer.

Well bad news, was cruising truck last week when the engine shut off on me going down the road. After I pulled over and got it restarted it wouldn’t do more than 5-10mph so I limped it home and parked it. Tried replacing fuel and fuel filter cause there was some bad gas in it and that helped, but pretty gutless. Did a compression check today and cylinders 4&5 are down 40psi with cylinder 6 being down 70psi… I’m not really sure if I’m gonna rebuild the engine again or just sell it as is and buy something ready for the season. I’ve spent the last 8 years trying to take this truck out and every year something happens with it and it may just be time to put it to pasture.

Shit box update: I bought a reman sohc motor from autozone and am finishing up the swap as we speak. The autozone engine is actually super legit, came with I think 3 if not 4 year warranty, compression and oil test results, melting oil pump, and full Felpro gasket set.

Took it on a test drive yesterday that went pretty bad, engine was completely gutless again which was not ideal lol. Brought it back to the house, dropped the exhaust and had half a cat fall out of the Y pipe with the down stream cats clogged as shit too. So committed and couple crimes after lunch to let her breathe and that engine SINGS now. When the engine was out I took the chance to do a full prep on the front end with ball joints, repainting, swapping out my front diff, getting the front shocks rebuilt and revolved by @Hi-Desert Motorsports shit I even replaced the steeering box just cause I was already in there and it had some play.

Short list of things to finish up before a tuning session is some electrical gremlins, finalizing core support mounts, hood and fiberglass, then just nice things like wiring my baller ass brake light from @marcytech

So heads up for all the people on here that might be as dumb as me, don’t put your main fuel line up against the EGR tube, will scare the shit out of the next morning when you start it up 😅

In other news I took the chance to mount my fenders prop up a bumper and son of a bitch the thing looks like a truck again for the first time in a few years. I have to be out of town for work for a few weeks, but when I get back I’m hoping to final mount the fenders, get a new fuel line from a junkyard, and drive mofo!

Back in town from work and found an absolute STUNNER at the junk yard! Apparently the mercury mountaineers, or at least this one, have all braided fuel lines instead of the plastic ones like the rangers and explorers do. Only con is you may have to go up a couple stories to find the right one, but yoinked mine out in 10 minutes and $20 later I was a happy customer! (Till I spent 3 hours putting it in cursing all ford engineers past when I dropped a bolt down an intake port in the head that by the hair on my nuts I managed to get out with a magnet.)

Anywho the shit box runs still, but now with the absolute luxury of not spitting fuel on the exhaust! Gonna try and get some interior stuff finalized then put bumpers on so I can look kewl.

Simple day plugging away at little stuff, got some hood pins mounted since I had to remove the latch to make room for the new tranny cooler. Touched up the nut I welded in with some of the alloy armor paint I grabbed to try and the shit is nice, best spray paint I’ve ever used!

Hoping that god loves me tomorrow and I can get the bumpers mounted, so in reality I’ll probably get one half done and punt a wrench in frustration at myself LOL

Well after a day of taking the wrong year bumper and cutting it half apart, almost burning a nipple off welding, and 2 beers, I have a front bumper again finally!

Also bonus pics from post office test drive and night pick cause bitches love fancy lights right?
