Thoughts on this cage? Is it worth it?

Found a decent looking cage kit for my 3rd gen 4runner that’s pre cut and bent and wanted peoples advice that know more about cages than I do on whether or not it’s worth getting this pre bent and cut one or if it’s not worth it for a “go fast” ish truck. My main concern is the bend around the dash. I think I could add tubes to it in strategic areas probably but where does it really matter to add tubes on this cage? There’s a kit to tie it into the frame id 100% use too

I was looking at getting the same one for my 4 runner they have some YouTube videos of 4 runners cartwheeling down the mountain with this cage in it and holding up pretty well. I think this is a hell of a lot better than nothing.

Yeah that’s my thought I think there’s a few spots I’d maybe want to add on still but 100% better than nothing and not really much chopping up to get a cage in there

seems better than nothing. Whats the cost on it?

Seems like it could use some cross bracing in it. But all depends on what you are planning on doing and how much you wanna spend.

It’ll likely save your life.

If you mount the cage on urethane bushing assemblies it might be a few years before it cracks to fuck at all the un-triangulated tube junctions

Yeah I agree it looks like it lacks in cross bracing just not sure where and what to add. It’s $870 before tax which seems reasonable but I don’t have any good reference points really for what a cage should cost for a good one

Yeah there’s a bushing mount chassis tie in kit I was thinking would be a good idea to do as opposed to welding the cage tubes to plate and sandwiching it to the floor which is the standard way of mounting this cage as far as I can tell.

I just looked at prefab cages for my f150, one was $2500 the other was $5000. so for $870 probably a good start and can build on it.

Agreed. This cage has half the tube as the TE Designs and other cages, but all the difficult-to-make tubes are there, and the remaining missing diagonals are fairly easy to make and would only require 1 bend or no bends.

If your 6ft or taller I would say look for something else, had that cage in my old 3rd gen 4runner and I hated it. Always hit my foot on the Apillar climbing in and out. I put foam on the a pillar toobs for headspace and would always hit my head on them anytime I looked out the window

I’m a little under 6ft so hopefully that won’t be an issue but good to know that it’s tight I kinda imagined it would be right in there getting out

I'm 6'5" and have this 4XI cage in my 86 pickup, I put it in, in one day 4 years ago. it was easy to install and cheap. I added a rear diagonal, harness bar and dash bar. after multiple abusive trips I have yet to find any cracks. I wouldn't use it in a fully built fast long travel truck, but for my low budget, stock 22r, mid travel truck I'm quite happy with it. I'll take some pics tomorrow to post for you.

Yeah I’ll have a similar ish application so that sounds pretty good

I really have no issues with hitting my head on the cage. I was worried about that so I put real roll cage padding every where, but haven't had a issue. The driver seat is kind of like a clown car, it looks compact but is quite big, to be able to drive the truck you have to be over 6 feet to be comfortable in the fixed seat mounts. I may change back to factory seats because my wife can't drive it anymore, can't see over the dash or reach the pedals.

Interesting this 4x design got poo-poo'd on Tacomaworld where almost no one has a truck with a cage in it and here it's at least being given a smidge of credit.

I know it's not the same as a .120 1.75" cross tube, but there's a factory tube you could may be tie into by extending the A pillar with some straight pieces to triangulate and maybe even punch through to make a tie in for a future engine cage. It'll most likely eliminate the vents though.
