I am open to doing an engine swap in my 1982 f250, it currently has a ford 400, that needs to be rebuilt. Before I spend money, I have this itch to do a Ford 300 with a turbo.

Is this a bad idea?

Great idea. I had a 300 bored with a cam and larger valves with opened up runners and higher comp ratio. Next would have been a turbo. I didnt get to dyno it because the truck got totaled in a crash during the break in period.
It was fun with a ZF-5 Tranny.

Man bummer on the truck getting smashed, A zf-5 will be ideal for me. The ford bell housing combos confuse me. Dose the 300 have the small block bell or the same as the 460/400?

From what ive read and remember on mine it uses the small block bellhousing. 300,302 or 351

It’s one of the longest lasting, best engines ever made period. You pretty much can’t kill them, and they have been used in everything from trucks to tractors to pumps to farm equipment. They have a decent aftermarket support, the later model engines (4.9) have fuel injection, and quite a few have made custom 6cl LS heads work. Don’t expect it super high revving but they make a ton of torque

It's a standard small block bell housing. They are great engines, lots of low rpm torque. They just don't like to be revved up like a v8.

I sold my last 300 6 that stripped plastic cam gear to Dave with Premier Boat and Trailer. He said he builds the 300 6 with aluminum head turbo, industrial forged cranks and gets 1200 hp. Dave Smith 951-906-3034

If anyone needs a 300 6 I have and 89 f150 with 4.9 6 cyl 5 speed manual and manual t-case in my personal junkyard for sale. Shoot me a DM if you want the best ford straight 6 they offered. Even has custom painted valve cover
