I feel a bit jaded by all this. I know its so devistating, and major losses, but why does california continue to let this happen... Every year we have massive fires... why arent we learning from it.
Also i am kinda annoyed by it all due to insurance.. All i have heard for last couple years is the insurance companys pulling out of CA, or refusing to insure people because of fires. There has to be a solution to all this. And then we have electric companies who cut peoples power when the winds come up due to fire... how is that a great solution? why arent they investing in better infrastructure than to leave people without power?
Maybe these same issues happened in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, but it was never apparent to me.
It’s definitely a complex situation from the lack of firefighters due to cut funding to poor maintenance surrounding areas, the crazy winds and the lack of rain and lack of water in the fire hydrants, poorly maintained powerlinesall contribute to the losses
As far as the insurance these insurance companies are in the business to make money. So if they’re losing money, they can’t continue to sell a product just like a restaurant doesn’t sell a dish if they’re losing money night after night There’s laws in place that these insurance companies need to abide by in order to lawfully cancel an insurance policy and that’s give plenty of notice prior to non-renewal and they can’t pick and choose houses that they don’t want to insure that are in more risky areas than others so what a lot of these companies have done is just completely leave the state. This legally allows them to cancel or non-renew all of their policyholders again with plenty of notice of the non-renewal. What no doubt leaves the customer in a bad spot but does give them plenty of time to seek other options. The other options likely aren’t going to be as cost-effective but there’s a reason the company is getting out of the business in the state at the premium. They’re currently charging. It’s not enough to losses As far as looking to blame anyone on the Insurance situation, you would want to look at the elected officials at the department of insurance that have not allowed companies to increase the rates, therefore leaving them no other option but to continue to bleed money or exit the state to try to remain profitable. California has a program called California FAIR Plan, which has been put in place as a last resort coverage if you’re unable to get fire insurance the problem is it can be costly but let’s be honest covering what they’re insuring is costly to replace as well so if you had a premium that you were paying $3000 or $4000 a year and they covered your house for 1,000,000+ worth of insurance it’s a pretty damn good deal if you actually use it. I’ve seen a ton of posts floating around on the Internet about the insurance companies this insurance companies that and while I’m with you, I don’t wanna pay the crazy premiums and I see claims handled poorly. Nobody opened up their mailbox January 1 and was just canceled. They’ve had plenty of notice to know that they needed to get something else in place.
I went to a meeting this morning and listened to the vice president of sales from Safeco and vice president sales from travelers talk about this very issue and they had made mention that just the estimated losses for only the California FAIR Plan from the Palisade fire is estimated at $6 billion of exposure for the California FAIR Plan and the fire is at zero containment.
Shit is just crazy this is a neighborhood in the palisades. so damn sad
I totally understand why insurance pulls out. Its just a totally sucky situation.... I dont have a better solution to insurance but sometimes its a hard pill to swallow... The amount I have paid into insurance since i started driving could pay for alot of shit... I know its the one time you need it deal, but after 20 years of never using it and hearing the costs are going up for us sucks. But it is what it is......
While i am bitching its also hard to pay insurance all this time and then when you do need to use it, it seems as they are trying to do everything they can not to spend thier money and you have to fight them (happened with my Heart Attack). Its hard to be required to pay for a service by law and sometimes feels like we are shaken down by these companies like they are the mafia...... Elliot we should call you the Don of BLGT lol.
As for the state, well nobody is happy with them.
