has anyone done this iconic trail? My good buddy has invited me to join him on a "tour" run on this trail in a utv.

he has done this the last 3 years with a friend of his and now purchased his on utv and ask me to go along.

what kind of things would i expect and different then a baja trip?

got my tentcot out and ready to go. does anyone else ues these. they are great to get you off the ground and they wrap up small and compact. i use these for point to point runs in my truck. takes 10 minutes to set up.

I've been on the trail several times in trucks, never a UTV, but I'd definitely recommend anyone go if they have the opportunity. Only been to Baja once and the experiences were worlds different, but I'd pick a Rubicon trip over a Baja trip.

Never been... But heard it's rad with a lot of small lakes to take a dip in when it's hot out.

Also never heard anything negative about the Rubicon. Jelly... Going to be planning a trip up there sooner then later when I get a little more vacation time.

I've done it probably 10 times, a tent cot seams pretty cumbersome to pack in a UTV. I usually just sleep under the stars on a good pad or a hammock between rigs. Less gear and more beer is the name of the game. The El Dorado County Sheriff patrols it pretty hard watching out for open containers they have a cabin up there with a couple bad ass jeeps built by WFO. Every vehicle is required to have a wag bag and a spill kit and you need a forest service fire permit if you plan on having a camp fire or even using a gas stove.

wow, did not know they are so tight on stuff. i am just a good ole baja travel guy.

good thing this is an organized group tour. the organization pays/gets all the permits. this is probably why they are cooking all breakfast and dinners. i have 3 sizes of tentcots. i am just bringing the small one. its in a case tht is about 4.5"x4.5" x40". smaller then a tent + air mattress + ground cover + air pump. my set up is less then 10 min from zipper to sleep.

Awesome, you going have fun!!

had a good time on this run. it was organized by the same group that does the jeeper jamboree runs on the trail. bob, the main guy host 500-600 4x4 on those runs.
in the 3rd annual utv run we only had about 30 utvs. people from all over the west coast. they cooked steak, ribs, asada burritos and breakfast. had some live entertainment and a good out door mostly open bar.
my buddy bought a new razer 4 door and had it upgraded with the plastic skids/sliders, 35" tires and several bolt ons.
it ran great and surprized me how well it slid over the rocks.
