Anyone taking the Mojave trail to Rage at the River this weekend 12-13? If so, can I tag along?

I was going to park at Rob's house (Rj Fab) but it was a trek from there last time ha ha! I wish I knew exactly where to enter the trail. I heard Manik Road off the 15? I might just drive the prerunner the entire way. Towing and finding a safe spot is always a hassle.

However I suck at GPS etc and have always followed someone there and don't know where to enter the trail, etc.

Ps. the "New Post" section doesn't work.

We always start mohave trail to Rage off the Afton Canyon on I15 you can pick it up sooner but for us it was stage at a friends property in Newberry springs then drive the frontage road up to Afton. Some years we had friends drive trucks and trailers to Laughlin so we could trailer home other years we just drove the hwy back to where we staged.

Unfortunately I won't be doing the run this year.

Ahh thanks man! Is it pretty obvious to see wherethe trail starts when you get off Afton Canyon exit?

It's going to be just me and my chick and 2 GPS units I have ZERO idea how to work lol

Yea there's really only one way to get into afton once you get off the exit. Once you get threw Afton and to the train bridge at the end you'll be in Razor Rd OHV there's a main wash through there that you follow pretty much to the fence line of the mohave preserve then from there its pretty much follow the trail.

Back in 2012 ish I did it in a jeep with my dad and we had no GPS no OnX nothing like that just a copy of the "Mojave Trail Road Book" lol we didn't run into many problems its pretty self explanatory. Little side note if you ever are unsure if you're on the correct trail just look for then little stacked up rock piles called Cairnes they're all over to guide you along the trail and at every major trail crossing you'll see them.

Google Mojave trail Cairnes you'll see what im talking about. Can't upload images at the moment.

Hell yeah dude! Thank you VERY much!

Not doing it this year but we always start off at Dale Evan’s. Dirt past slash x, shirt pageant to dust into new berry springs then either 40 to hector rd or straight north to afton canyon

Right on! It just seems so damn far from me lol. Afton Cayon Rd. exit off the 15 is 2 hours and 28 mins from me. That's a long boring drive on the street with a loud ass truck lol.

Ehhh, youre looking at it wrong. Grab some gas at the victimville costco right off the 15 (wait, will your truck run on pump gas or does it only take the pinkies-out race gas? If the 2nd one, good luck). Then, 30-ish minutes later youre at BARSTOW DEL TACO. Stop there, grab some tasty breakfast and a holiday tshirt. Stretch your old man legs. Break the boring part up into manageable chunks.
On the long pavement sections Ive found that listening to podcasts helps with the monotony.
Either way, just remember that we do all this stuff because its supposed to be fun lol.

I'll have a small group of 3-4 trucks running it starting at Afton on the 12th at roughly 730-8am. We'll definitely be a lot slower paced as the majority are stock but maybe we'll see ya out there. I ran it years ago, it seemed pretty straight forward all the way to the 95. I marked some land marks on Google Earth just to keep me informed of where we are ahead of time.

Currently we, @theycallmeWALLY, a friend of his and I, are driving the 4runner out. Unfortunately I think we are going to be a bit behind the main flux of people on the trail as we wont be hitting dirt till mid day off the 40, prob drop into trail off of kelso road.

@Klever ya the best way to do Mojave trail is driving the truck out, it becomes a hassle with trying to hide or park a trailer somewhere. Plus then it helps open up options for the way home too when traffic gets bad.

Thanks dude!

I was literally just going to ask if Soda Dry Lake was closed. I read that too. Bummer. I wanted to do more dirt ha ha! I am going to try and take Kelbaker Rd off the 15 Freeway and hope I find the trail LOL. I have been spending hours how to figure out these apps (AllTrails and ONX) and my stupid GPS units, etc. No prevail. Derp!

I was wondering if anyone has recently traveled it. And how deep the water crossings are this year.

I just need to find a close gas station near Kelbaker Rd. My truck gets bad fuel mileage ha ha!

You can run through all of Afton canyon then down the sandwash until you hit a fence. Turn right and it'll take you to the railroad tracks near Crucero which you would follow to the powerline, through the dunes and back to Kelbaker rd. Gas is in Harvard, Baker, and Palm Gardens to the north and Ludlow and Fenner to the south.

If youre planning on jumping in at kelbaker then youll be missing the water crossings (unless youre planning on doing a lot of back-tracking which would be pointless IMO).

You can grab kelbaker from either the 15fwy OR the 40fwy. I *think* youll hit more of the trail if you drive all the way to baker (lots of places to grab gas there too), then take kelbaker rd to where it intersects with the mojave road. Youll bypass soda lake that way. Or do some google earth prerunning and jump in from kelbaker rd a little early (vs going all the way to where it intersect the mojave rd) to maximize the dirt.

(Or just do any of what brian just said)

Thanks for all the help dudes! You all have been VERY helpful. And I "think" I know where to go...(wish me luck) at 2-4mpg with a 50 gallon cell.

To put it all in perspective: I work from home and only drive about 3,500 miles a year. I don't EVER know where I am going. I need old school Thomas Guide maps. Somehow I run an online business (with the help of my website people lol).

I am technology illiterate ha ha. I have a carburetor and an MSD ignition on the truck; VERY basic.

PS Desert_Steve I did Google Earth "prerunning", thank you! Never tried that before.

What I gathered, is off Kelbaker Road by the "Worlds Tallest Thermometer" in Baker, CA off the 15 Freeway (lots of gas stations). really close by I see MANY dirt roads...none are marked as Mojave Road OHV Trail. I just don't want to take the wrong dirt road and get lost. I don't have excess fuel for that.

I may need to just wait and get a new GPS in my truck and have PCI Race Radios train me on it or something. This technology is too overwhelming for me.

Can't someone just hold my hand? I am a pussy. Plus my woman is coming with me and she will not be hip to me winging it and getting lost. Also...my white ass can't be in the sun all day if we have to walk or something from me getting us lost (even though I have SPF100 sunscreen and an umbrella LOL)
