Been a while since I’ve been south of the border!
Hooked up with some friends and we headed down to our friend Doug’s and headed to his place at Pete’s Camp in San Felipe.
Left Sat morning March 21st. Got down to San felipe that afternoon and just got settled in and grabbed some food.
Got up Sunday and got breakfast in town then took the trucks and ran around the coast for a bit just going to Random spot and seeing different things and made our way over to Legacy Lodge.
Monday met with the rest of our group a rallied together to start our trip to head down south! One of the trucks had some wiring grimlins that we thought we found to be the ignition switch. Got that back together and we started our trip.
Our first day we made our way south headed to Bay Of LA. This was roughly 2.5hrs of highway until we got to Coco’s corner and then started our dirt adventure there. Then took Calamajué wash through to the highway. That was roughly 2Hrs or so of off-roading and then took the BOLA cutoff (my favorite of the whole trip) then did the last 40 miles highway and made it down to Daggits in BOLA where we got a room for the night and got some food.
Next day (Tuesday) we got up and we headed about 20 miles north to get on to the Mission San Borja trail. This was a pretty scenic and mountainous trail with every bit of scenery you could think of. Made it to the mission and checked it all out for about an Hour. The we heads through the desert northwest to meet our cutoff to jump on the pacific beach.
Got on to the beach and we headed south in the coast for 25 miles before getting back onto the highway to get the last fuel stop before we headed to El Arco on into The Ranch in Escondido. This was a 85 miles before getting all desert trail. This was a fun fast long section to stretch the legs of the trucks!
Pulled into the ranch around 4pm and dropped all our stuff of an headed to San Francisquito Beach to see how run down it got. (Turns out it was really bad and pretty much gone).
Got back to the ranch where we made some cocktails and just bbq’ed some ribeyes one of the guys brought down from Visalia, we got to stay in some pretty badass glamping domes. It was epic and pretty peaceful. I actually woke up and just hung my feet off the balcony of mine since mine was the highest in the rocks. I just gazed out seeing the stars and not seeing any lights of life anywhere… made it feel so surreal and just calming. The most peace I’ve probably had in quite some time.
Next day (Wednesday) we got up and they made us all breakfast and we packed up up to leave. Jumped in the trucks with about 100 miles to go back up to Bay Of LA. We jumped on the Baja 1000 course and took that to about 45 miles and hit the Cortez sea again. Stopped and picked around for shells and other little bits. Watched dolphins play around seen some Burros on the beach just living their best life. Then headed north angain About another 45 miles to Animas (Bahía De Las Animas). This was a cool cover of clear water and jumping fish. It was awesome to just stop and replay for a bit.
Got back into our trail to head into Bola to refuel and regroup. Taking the same highway back was the cutoff road that I liked so much… as bad as I wanted to hit it again we had another truck with some tire problems that just wasn’t worth taking the chance being off the beaten path with the tires he had, so we opted to skip…very lucky we did..
My truck blew the oil pressure sensing unit apart. Obviously not having another cause who would carry one… we plugged it off using a 3/8” male air line fitting and some hose with a bolt in the end of it.
Had to stop and tinker with that 2-3 times… ended up getting in at 11:30pm Wednesday night.
Thursday we got up and just messed around town. Went to Race Land and hung out with George and had a good time there and then went to race course to watch the last bit of cars prerunning and line testing etc, went to dinner and hung out.
Also got to meet and have Ivan Stewart sign some posters for me!
Friday we got up and went to tech a contingency. Did that for a majority of the day and went out that evening to watch more last min rerunning a testing. Came back to the house where the owner of shockseals came over and invited us to his place 3 doors down and he gave us a TON of swag packages. more stickers and shirts and coozies than i know what to do with lol!
Sat got up and headed out to the course to watch the race! It was badass to see the truck and cars etc we spectated all day and just did that. Came back to the house we all took naps and got dinner and prepped to head home Sunday!
Was an epic time and a good full week in Baja! I definitely can’t wait to get back!
