heading out to Oceano dunes on Labor Day weekend for the first time. any tips/ anything to watch out for? anything cool to check out
? thanks in advance

Yo dude, great area.

Make your reservations in advance if you are planning on camping.

Air down front and rear tires at least psi 15 not sure what you are in. I go down to 12 in front and 10 out back when I’m in 2wd prerunner. And yes it makes that big of a difference.

The chevron gas station on grand Ave has air at each pump if you don’t have a compressor to air back up.

When starting from a stop make sure your front wheels are pointed straight ahead and not turned otherwise you are anchoring the truck. Not as important in 4wd but 2wd it will

You’ve got to have a flag mounted on the truck if you are going back in dunes. They sell them there. We have some for sale on the site ( shameless plug)

Keep speed at 15 on the beach or the rangers will roll you.

Going away from beach you are going to have steep dunes to traverse down. Depending on time of day can be difficult to read the dunes to just be careful until you learn the lay of the land.

Don’t stop on up hill if you can avoid it.
Lastly if you are digging and going nowhere stop and access the situation. Don’t hammer the gas and bury it to the frame.

Food wise Splash is good fish and chips place. Orcutt burger is a solid burger joint
Coffee shop in Oceano called del Tina. @Jared MacLeod wife point us to that place 🤌

@Lutz does hummer tours there he can take you for a wild ride if you wanna cruise around in a H1 hummer.

what else am I missing @4lowlance @Endless Trails @Pt Mugu RAM 4x4

With modern rims and tires the low tire pressure issue isn't as bad as people make out. I agree with the below 15 as a good target with what ever you are driving (as long as it isn't on 16.5s). I will run 12ish in my Megacab on 37s and 5 in my sons Jeep TJ on 33s. I would usually end up around 5 in my Bronco on 35s by the end of the night at comp back when the hill had action and leave it there for the rest of the trip.

I like Garlands for burgers. Clam Chowder garlic sourdough bread bowls up by the pier. Don't remember the name of the place. Everything else @dwphoto said is pretty spot on.

If you are playing in the bowls and not going straight up the hills and start to slow due to a soft spot, turn down more real quick and gas it. Same but as you slow your back end tries to pass you, turn up and gas it as it should point your vehicle straight up and down. You will be stopped, but you can back down. Moral of the story is you don't want to end up not moving forward while sideways on the dune. No dune is too steep to go down. Whether or not there is a way out of the bottom is a different story.

Not every dune is flat on top! Watch for witch eyes in the corners of the smaller dunes when you are on top. Don't get sucked into the fence line.

Bring a shovel and a strap and ways of connecting said strap to your vehicle and who ever is nice enough to yank you. Before you ask someone to yank you, dig out the truck. Remove sand from in front of your tires in the direction of the pull. If any part of your truck that isn't tires is touching sand then you need to dig more for self recovery.

ill be in my 4x4 4runner on beadlocks with onboard air so airing down/up wont be an issue. thanks for the tips i really appreciate it! that garlands joint sounds good

Garlands is always a stop for bomb burger's. I got the Donut Burger last time. It sounds strange since it's a bacon cheeseburger BUT it has glazed donuts as the buns. I lost a few years on my life expectancy but I'm alright with that after eating it.
