Fire Pit Recommendations/Thoughts

I built an ammo can fire pit a few years ago, and although it has served me somewhat well, I feel like all the heat just goes straight up into the air......I'm looking at one of those bouge' Tripod Torches because it has heat deflectors and sits higher, but can't mentally justify the cost (about 160 bucks). Does anyone either have any ideas on other fire pits (no ammo can ones), or, do you have experience with your Tripod Torch?

The Howl is bad ass but might not be what you are looking for as they are pricey but its something that is going to last a lifetime. It's totally sendable, has solid tie down mounts so you can strap it down in your truck and go. It cranks heat pretty much right away especially if you are running both the A-Flame ( top ) and the Barcoal ( sides). It's about the size of a bundle of wood. down side is it does like it's propane. On the trails that have burn bans it has been rad. Also have used it around the house for a quick fire in the backyard. Howl just launch a smaller option R1 that would be rad for summer camping, not sure first hand on the heat output.

Daaaang. Yeah, that thing is nice.
 
Looking at the tripod dealio you initially posted, why can’t you bend a piece of sheet metal to make your own deflector that sets into the ammo can?

That's not a bad idea. I don't have a brake to bend anything thick, but some thin sheet might work too.

yea it's pricey for sure. I am confident this thing will out last me.

Spread out over just since KOH last year I've probably used it 20 times on trips, in the back yard, etc.

That R1 is the ticket, the size and the price point. Especially for summer trip going to places with burn bans, when it's not need for the warmth just the campfire vibe.

Going out the the desert with big group. Burning wood is the answer. These propane fire pits definitely have their place. The biggest complain about a lot of the different options is the warmth aspect. The R4 solves that issue but downside is you gotta pay for it.

I went to Lowe's and got some 16ga (they didn't have 18 in a size that made sense). I cut two pieces of it and stuck them in the side of the ammo can to force the heat my way. Thanks for the suggestion.
 
This thing is tiny! Pretty stoked to try it out. Way lighter and compact. For 4 wheeling trips when space is a premium with then truck is already loaded to the gills.

They are pretty sweet. Heat output is decent this little guy is sore of a Summer / Spring type of set up if you had this out at KOH when it's super cold not gunna be pumping out enough heat like the R4.

I was super impressed with it at the Lonely Pinos run. One of the first propane pits I have seen that went past the mostly ambiance into function.

Good info. Thanks. I'm not looking for KOH-proof heat, but don't want or need something that only puts out a fire ambiance... need SOME heat to justify it... good to hear you're happy with it.

The R1 or R4? I’ll pony up for the R1 if it’s good. No way I’m going for the R4… just can’t justify it!
