Looking at rehearing my bronco to 4.56s and might as well throw in a locker so who has some recommendations for what to use. I was thinking of the spartan locker or lsd but I’m not sure what’s best I don’t rock crawl so an arb air locker doesn’t seem like a good fit but I know nothing about lockers I could be wrong. School me with all your years of experience😂

Iv used spools, Detroits, and lunch box lockers. I recommend using a Detroit or Yukon grizzly locker a little pricey compared to a spool. Very predictable on the street and never had issues not being locked in the dirt. Spools are great but a little annoying on the street like in tight parking lots I.E. the mall or local high school if you remember the DR days. Also spools are a little more annoying the shorted wheel bast you have. IMO

Disclaimer, i only have 32"s.
I was in the same boat with my '99 exploder. I got a spartan lunchbox locker and ran that in the rear differential for almost 2 years with stock gears. It "slipped" only 2 times and besides that it opened up a world of opportunities of where I could go vs the stock open rear end.

It clicked pretty loudly when doing sharp u-turns but didnt bother me. It took a couple week to get used to driving it on the street but after that was very manageable.

I did some research and found that for street/desert use, a detroit locker was the best option for me.

I got it regeared and had the spartan swapped out for the robust, detroit, true locker and couldn't be happier. Quieter with no more clicking while turning and has yet to slip.

I think its pretty common with many lockers to get a loud pop every now and then which is what I get. The pop doesnt affect how the locker functions in my case. It is just a noise and I keep on trucking.

Ok I’ve been looking for a used one but hard to justify a new when I don’t know if I plan to keep the 8.8 and DR days are a bit before my time😂

That’s what I’ve hear with the spartan the clicking but I hardly put street miles on the truck anymore only to get to the desert it’s also going to be used even less when I plan to get a new truck so those little faults don’t bother me too much and I do plan on building a 9” one day

When I got my diff built at EWR aj recommended a wavetrac locker. USA made and slightly different technology and I believe a “lifetime warranty”. Check it out

I really like the torsen style gear type limited slips. I have a truetrac in the back of my truck and its great. Its not for rock crawling but it has always done great on the street and in the sand. I have a trd clutch type lsd in the front and its really stiff. Feels almost locked and you can really tell when you are in 4wd with the hubs locked. It steers even worse than stock which is already not great.

My Tacoma originally came with a lock-rite lunchbox locker in the 8.4 It worked good. When I went to a 9in I got a Yukon Zip air Locker. Seal housing failed 2nd trip. Fixed it, failed again. swapped in spool rearend, never failed besides the gears starting to make noise.

My brother silverado GM14 bolt floater has been running a grizzly locker for 10 years and works good. Makes some clicking noise in town but works great

If you're only going to be driving to/from the desert and no rock crawling, get a spool. I know exactly how it's going to behave 100% of the time, less moving parts, cheaper, more robust...

Ive run a sparten on my bronco with 35s for like 8 years now. besides some weird looks in parking lots when it loudly disengages its been good enough. eventually I will upgrade to a detroit style locker probably a grizzly.. I like the one i currently have in my f250.

I had a powertrax "no slip" lunch box locker in my crown vic. It was way less harsh than the spartan and better on the street. I didnt offroad a whole bunch with it and it only had 31s though.
