Here’s my 2004 Toyota Tacoma. I sold my one ton/caged TJ to build something a bit more streetable again. Started life with me in 2022 with 594,000km and I drove it for a few months while I collected parts. This truck was such a good daily driver I almost regretted cutting it apart. The goal was a low, small(ish), very streetable/usable all around truck. Since I was a little late to the platform I took a lot of inspiration from other builds that seemed to work well.

Currently sits on 37s at 21ish inch frame height

Anyways, pretty much just your typical Toyota build - Toyota mini axles with all the goodies, arb’s, 4.88, RCV’s, ECGS hp third, Marlin filled dual cases, 3 link front with 14” fox coilovers, radflo air bumps, 63s in the rear. Sits on 37” trail grapplers/TR beadlocks in the summer and 38” mud grapplers/15x10s/coyote internal beadlocks in the winter.

Originally I had a front mini truck axle widened 3” on the short side for it, I found out pretty quickly that it wasn’t going to work. The third was way too far into the oil pan, basically no uptravel, driveline issues. Ended up going back to a stock mini truck housing and wheel spacers to gain the width I needed(not what I wanted, but it works)

Part 1 of the build ( December ‘22-April ‘23) I bobbed the bed 9”, new rear frame, new front frame - all 2x3”. Raised the engine, raised the transmission. Pretty much did anything reasonable I could to get the most uptravel. On paper, everything I did worked great.. ran into some issues once I actually put tires on it. The very narrow axle, paired with a decently big tire and lots of travel/articulation, made it hard to keep the tires out of hard parts. I started with trimming inner fenders, battery relocation, bigger wheel spacers, I just couldn’t keep the tires away from steering box/body. So I decided to limit my travel for the time being

Part 2. April ‘23- May ish ‘24

ECGS scored the arb when building it so I had to send that back for warranty. Very inconvenient.

Mostly just put miles on the truck. Lots of bike hauling, daily driving. Racked up a solid 15,000km over this one year span.

Built some rock sliders, had to tear down the transfer cases due to noise, found out I had a failing input gear. To me it seemed like the hardened surfacing was coming off. Marlin warrantied (though they didn’t make it very easy).

Snow came, did some wheeling, picked up my new trail ready wheels/37” stt pros.

Pictures continued. Wheeling mostly.

Worked for some more uptravel, moved everything around a bit up front. Built a little junction block and relay holder. Repaired a crack in the frame from my anti wrap.

Swapped out my original grizzly rear locker for an ARB. Built a transmission and steering ram skid plate

Part 3?

Went to Moab. Really enjoyed it there, truck worked great. Quite a few broken Toyota parts (not mine) that took out Hayden’s truck for a few of the days. Good thing this truck is a 4 door!!

Nov ‘24 - now

Got back from Moab, first snow trip out solo I blew up the original engine in it. Swapped it out and got back to it. Not much wheeling last winter, snow left a lot to be desired. Bought another double cab needing frame work for a new daily.

Picked up a little copilot in March. Most of the summer was revolved around him lol.

Swapped out the STT pros for a fresh set of trail grapplers.

Did another Moab trip this fall, and then ripped the front end apart for some much needed work. Started with just a new bumper, and turned into a radiator support, which will turn into an engine cage eventually.

Next up is figuring out some new rear suspension. 63s are pretty clapped, would like to pick up some better shocks than the off the shelf bilsteins.

More of the front end and got the interior more dialed in. Added a switch pros to simplify wiring a bunch after I added the 4 Baja designs lights.

Finally gave up hope of trying to use all my available uptravel with this front axle. Made extended bump stop mounts. Once I have a bit wider of an axle I should be able to utilize it all.

And lastly, got out wheeling a few weeks ago.

Sick to see some more details on this thing, I check it out on ig all the time.
That’s where I frequent, but it’s hard to post on ig without it all just getting lost/going unseen. It’s not the best build/parts compared to most builds you see on there but it works well and i’m always happy to share details if I can
