Figured I’d do a short build thread on my 1986 4Runner. I’ve had it now for about 5 months and a lot has changed on it already. It went through a lot of revisions before I owned it so there’s some pretty janky shit still on the truck, for now. It’s basically a 22re propane, 5 speed, dual cases with 2.28 and 4.7, tons (Chevy d60) with Yukon chromos, grizzly locker and 5.13s and rear is 14 bolt shaved grizzly locker as well. Full hydro PSC, front was 4linkwd when I got it (very, very poorly) and 63s in back. 4xinnovations full cage. Dovenosed in the front. This is how it looked when I got it. I bought it with no wheels/tires as it had red labels before and I hate BFG so I threw on my old race wheels with 37 treps on temporarily to get it home.IMG_1243.webp

Had a bad R&P in the front so I had my buddy redo the front with a new set from Yukon and slapped it back in. I also had a set of Mickey Thompson Baja Boss X off the TMR 4400 Ultra4 we raced a couple years ago so I put those on my Method 105 Beadlocks. IMG_1476.webp

Also added some cheap Amazon lp6 knockoffs and cut down/painted the hard top since it had a ton of damage to the passenger side anyway.

Wheeled it like this for a couple months while tidying up some janky electrical stuff. Found some doors and painted them white to match. Realized my 2dr JK mesh Spiderwhatever top fit absolutely perfectly on the 4xinnovations cage. Sweet. Put a mesh sunroof cover from Amazon over the sunroof hole IMG_1866.webp

By this point I was really getting annoyed by the absolute lack of flex out of the back with the 63” springs, I thought maybe the anti wrap bar was binding it up so I took it off. Zero difference. Literally maybe 2-3” up/down travel. IMG_1881.webp

Ton of body roll, just felt like trash in general on big articulation stuff. Put my 14” 2.5” Kings from one of my race cars on the front. Way more better. Went to Great American Crawl and the Runna did great but that was the last straw with the lack of rear suspension travel. IMG_0772.webpIMG_0178.webp

Also finally got rid of all the gay SEMA mermaid green

So from here I bought a Barnes4wd triangulated 4 link kit and short 14bolt truss, I had 2” .250 wall from some previous projects and shock mounts, limit straps and an antirock bar. My 13 year old son helped quite a bit with the grinding and stuff under the truck. Did some simple measuring and then threw brackets together and started welding. Decided to fill the gap between the front and rear links kinda like a subframe type of deal. Turned out pretty good. Used 2x4 box.

Started thinking about how to fit a spare 40 for KOH prerunning. Fits perfectly above the propane bottles. Just gotta weld some tabs up for the ratchet straps. IMG_0414.jpeg

finally got a chance to go wheel the new setup. Holy shit. Way better. Pretty much all I got left now before Hammers in late Jan is to rebuild the front links since there’s some serious clunky loose stuff in there. Other than that I think it’s good to go.IMG_0568.jpegIMG_0040.jpegIMG_0641.webp

Things sweet. I'm a sucker for the gold accents. Didn't traphouseyota on instagram own that previously for a bit?

Yeah for a short while. I bought it from him. He didn’t build it either, I’d love to know more of the history about it but he said he bought it from some methy dude in South Carolina 😂😂

Dude! what a unit!

Love it.. Thanks for posting up. You Racing KOH in the Jeep? ?

Ordered some new flex joints to redo my front links. That’s my last real project before KOH 26. Also installed my race siren off my Ultra4 UTV so I can get my boys attention when they’re ripping around on their dirt bikes when we’re trail riding and can’t hear me hollering. And because race car too. jK :D

Got all the front links redone with new weld on bushings (used Metalcloak duroflex because they were cheap and have good reviews). Just drove around a bit in the yard and feels WAY better. No more clunking or loose feeling front end. Rad. Put my chopped hard top on and pulled out the sliding glass windows and started mulling over some type of opening window solution that would keep rear passengers somewhat dry and warm in the cold.

IMG_0767.webp

Pulled out my old 2dr JK soft top side windows and I think I’m gonna try attaching them to the hard top somehow (trimmed down to the size of the sliding window frame). I’m thinking permanently attached at the top and then maybe some magnets on the side and bottom. The idea is for the boys to be able to climb up, open the window and crawl in and when they let go of the window it falls and snaps closed on the magnets. This ol girl doesn’t go much over 30-40 mph and never on the street so I don’t think wind buffeting will be too big of an issue. Still open to ideas though.
