On a whim, I decided to take my family (wife and daughter) up to Big Bear to see some fireworks, and camp somewhere around Holcomb Valley. Originally we were all planned out to go to Idyllwild (Boulder Basin), but there was a fire, and the thought of the County Cops waking me up with a helo and a loudspeaker telling me to run or burn, just didn't seem like fun......
I wanted to dispersed camp up by the Holcomb Pinnacles, but my wife asked a good question: what about our trash and the area's namesake, Big Bears? So I went to Holcomb Valley Campground and snagged a first-come, first-served (the whole campground is FCFS) on Wednesday morning. The camp host is this dude named Calvin who looks like he was one of the original miners in the valley, but he runs a tight ship and is a genuinely nice guy. The beauty of this campground is that there is no water, and no electricity, in addition to needing either a little ground clearance or a DGAF attitude with your passenger car to get up there.....so it eliminates a lot of the problems with campgrounds in general....ya know what I mean?
I was able to test out Tmobile's Starlink collaboration and it worked great, especially since my wife had to come in on Thursday, we were able to text with 0 cell phone reception up there (another beautiful thing).
It was peaceful, we got to explore more trails, see some fireworks, eat at Tropicali (a poke place that has southwestern tiki vibes) and we found some cool dispersed spots heading toward Delmar Mountain.
