Took another trip this weekend to explore some more local trails close to Bakersfield.
What an epic time! When people think of Bakersfield they think farmland, chop shops ICE and hookers on Union Ave…. That’s all true.
BUT, the surrounding areas are absolutely beautiful (when they aren’t on fire ).
This trip we hit was called Cow Flat. It literally had cows all over it so that made it fun as well just to see them. Who knew cows are so side eye and judgmental…this trip we started on highway, Get on Comanche Dr and head towards Breckinridge Rd. Kinda choppy asphalt road then a forestry gate blended into the other gates.
Cow-Flat Trail was definitely pretty easy as far as mountain trails in this area…. Which is awesome for a smooth fun relaxing scenic trip and it doesn’t limit the people who want to go but don’t have “built” trucks, 1 lane road 99.9% of the trail. Super cool ridge sections, blind corners around big rock face walls and some pretty cool creek and spring crossings with canopies of trees. Definitely give this trail a 8/10 for smooth fun time.
3 hrs trail time stopping for photos, scenic views and just taking in what the trail had to offer us.
Once finished we headed up to KernVille and had lunch at the Kern River Brewery. Awesome place to stop overlooking the Kern River and then coming back across Lake Isabella. Which is perfect if your heading back towards Bakersfield cause then the next trail is easy to hit on the way to or from cowflat.
The next trail was Black Gulch or Freeway Trail off of 178 heading into Lake Isabella. This was a pretty short trail with only roughy 8-10 miles of actual trail. First mile was asphalt… I was thinking “damn I coulda done this on the 405….” Then finally we hit some dirt! Pretty cool smooth trail and was thinking “well this is gonna be a breeze”… yea….well that changed after about a mile and we faced some pretty decent inclines with boulders protruding out. Then it became all out rock climbing. Which we found actually was a lot of fun and really not to bad for 2wd prerunners. 100% doable with a little speed and putting your purse down to get up and over some stuff.
Beautiful trail with some springs and pretty epic views. Definitely a jeep style trail.. but we made it work and had a good time, this trail took about 1.5hrs.
Anyway, enough rambling. Go see it, go do it, invite me and let’s get dusty.
